Talk about inspirational.

Now, as the world ever-so-slowly returns to some degree of normal, the King’s Lynn BID (the area’s Business Improvement District) is doing its bit to help entrepreneurs refocus, recover and grow – and we’re proud to share that 24 fingers has been invited to support.

We’re one of the companies featured in the King’s Lynn BID Business Support Package: Refocus, Recover & Grow, a scheme aimed at connecting BID members with professionals who can help their businesses survive and thrive, even in today’s challenging economic environment.

Business owners who aren’t sure of what help they need can browse the list on the Discover King’s Lynn website and contact anyone who catches their eye, or they can attend free short webinars offering a flavour of the areas the businesses in the group cover, from branding and business strategy, to social media and advertising.

“We’re thrilled to be able to offer our wide range of expertise to businesses in the King’s Lynn region,” said Emma Goode.

“The thought of revamping or refocusing a business at the best of times can be an intimidating task, but after the upheaval of last year, the King’s Lynn BID’s Business Support Package is a brilliant way to help entrepreneurs get back on their feet or find new avenues to explore. We can’t wait to start supporting.”

We’re 24 fingers, a digital marketing agency and a proud member of the 42 Club, Brentwood Chamber of Commerce, Excel Business Networking Group, the Trusted Business Community, the Organisation for Responsible Businesses and the Rotary Club of Brentwood à Becket.
On Monday 30th November, Emma became a member of Brentwood à Becket Rotary Club in a short ceremony during the club’s weekly meeting on Zoom when President Peter McAllister and members welcomed her into the club.

“I’m thrilled to have joined the Brentwood à Becket Rotary Club, and can’t wait to get involved in the great work it does, supporting local businesses and charities,” said Emma. “I’m really looking forward to becoming an active member of the club and doing my bit for the local community.”

Membership Chairman Ivan Armstrong said: “We are delighted that Emma has joined Rotary. When I first met her through the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce, I could see that Emma could be a great asset to Rotary, with her warmth and enthusiasm to help her community and that she would enjoy being in Rotary.”

Brentwood à Becket is part of a worldwide organisation of over 1.2 million people with over 50,000 members in the UK alone. They all share the desire to work together to take action to bring lasting change in their communities , across the globe and in themselves, summed up by the motto “Service above Self”. At the same time, they build lasting friendships, use and develop their skills and relationships with other business people.

In Brentwood, the club is best known for the organisation of the Brentwood Half Marathon which has grown over 38 years to a major event with over 4,000 runners and has raised well over £1million. Because of the pandemic, 2021 will be the first year the event has not taken place but, for 2022 and beyond, the club is looking to find new partners to share the load of what is now a major year-long undertaking.

Rotary can also provide the opportunity for smaller businesses to expand their community involvement. Although the pandemic has restricted some of the community service and fund raising that Brentwood à Becket would normally be doing it has not stopped them providing much needed funding to local charities to adapt to the effect on their clients and services. At the same time support has been provided for recent international emergencies.

Brentwood à Becket is a lively, active and successful club with a growing membership and, in more normal times, it meets weekly at the Marygreen Manor. Meetings will be held on Zoom until they are able to return there. If you want to learn more, you can contact the club at becketrotary@gmail.com.

We 100% agree.
It’s a chance to shout about the amazing talent of local artists and prove to anyone in Havering considering getting more involved with the arts that ANYTHING is possible.

As well as a community launch and exhibition, talented duo Lisa Brennan and Majida Burch are producing a full-colour book of exciting artists and creatives from Havering and the surrounding areas of London and Essex, and giving it away FREE to local secondary schools, libraries, project partners and artists.

It’s the first of a series they want to create with local community groups working with care leavers, older people, homeless people and mental health service users. The second book will feature artwork from looked-after children and care leavers in Havering. Lisa and Majida will mentor the young people, and artists from The Thing About Artists will also teach them valuable and diverse new creative skills.

Alongside 24 fingers, Havering Changing eagerly supported the project’s initial stages to create a digital version of the first book, and now Lisa and Majida need YOUR help to print and distribute it, and hold the launch and exhibitions.

As well as inspiring a new generation of local artists to explore their creative sides, there are some amazing rewards for pledging to the The Thing About Artists crowdfunder, including a limited edition Brennan & Burch notebook and postcard, and a pre-release book and two VIP tickets to meet artists at the official launch party.

Emma Goode of 24 fingers said: “We’re thrilled to be supporting The Thing About Artists project. Havering has such a wealth of creative talent, and what better way to promote our local artists than with a high-quality, full-colour book showcasing their work. We’re sure this will inspire the next generation of artists, and we’re very proud to be a partner.”

It will keep the spotlight firmly on Havering’s developing arts scene and bring art to an audience from seven to 70 – and beyond!

Co-founders Kat Waterhouse and Oliver Durose have been named Founder and Leader, and Founding Trustee respectively, while volunteers Gary Maxius and Lynn Connelly have been invited to join the Board of Trustees.

Since its launch on 22 March 2020, BMA has carried out over 3,000 individual tasks for residents, from shopping and delivering medication, to sourcing emergency food, dog walking, gardening tasks and running post office errands.

It has also offered a befriending service, delivering elements of counselling, to benefit the most isolated, fulfilling the simple aim: “if something needs to happen, we can do it”.

BMA has forged strong partnerships with those organisations and people it needed to provide the most effective support, including Brentwood Borough Council, Daily Bread Café, Manna Meals, Peabody Trust, parish councils and local food banks.

BMA has also led a number of initiatives and, by working collaboratively with its partners, continues to enhance both what support can be provided to residents and how that support can be delivered most effectively.

BMA has quickly built up a vast, experienced network of volunteers, including 25 dedicated call handlers who are ready to listen and respond to the needs of residents, as well as business relationships and other partners, all working together to provide support in every corner of the Borough and in as many ways as possible.

Registering BMA as a Charitable Trust has secured its future, and it will continue to provide support for the practical needs of residents – even after the pandemic is over – working closely with the majority of local agencies to ensure targeted support gets to where it is needed most.

“Having only lived in the Borough for four years prior to lockdown, I was completely oblivious to the level of need in our community,” said co-founder Kat Waterhouse. “BMA gave me a purpose throughout the pandemic as I was able to use my newly found free time in a valuable and rewarding way. For this, I will always be thankful.

“I am immensely proud of each and every volunteer who not only gave up their time during lockdown, but who also committed to Brentwood Mutual Aid and our residents going forward, post-Covid. Without them, we would not have been able to ensure the future of BMA and most importantly, the support of our vulnerable neighbours.”

If you are a resident looking for help, an agency that would like to make referrals to BMA or if you want to become a volunteer, call 01277 424 953, email admin@brentwood-mutual-aid.org or visit the group’s Facebook page.

There are certain idiosyncrasies that set the British race apart from the rest of the world. First and foremost is the sheer quantity of tea consumed on these shores. The world is set to rights over a freshly brewed cuppa. So much so that when Jeb Bush, presidential candidate, tweeted THAT picture of a handgun and simply tagged it ‘America’, Twitter wags hastily posted a picture of a cup of tea and tagged it ‘the United Kingdom’… amongst other mocking posts that is.

The Brits are also famed for the myriad of ways we say sorry. There is an endearing quality to this stilted, apologetic way we have of speaking, in fact Hugh Grant seems to have made a career out of it. ‘I’m fine’ can mean anything from ‘I’m in a wonderful mood’, to ‘I’m coping with a great tragedy’. In the workplace ‘That’s not bad’ is received as the highest compliment. ‘Excuse me’ is used as a genuine apology or an angry utterance. That’s another thing about us Brits, we can turn passive aggression into an art form. We are masters of the understatement, kings and queens of the veiled insult. And we seem genuinely bemused when our US counterparts don’t understand our sarcasm.

The British embraced Twitter emojis in all their expressive glory. A study by Bangor University found 29 per cent of people with smartphones use them in half of their messaging. For a nation of people who can’t quite express emotion without a long drawn-out apology beforehand, these cheeky little icons have saved everyone a lot of bother.

For business too, it is a huge relief that the UK has taken to emojis. Posts take on new life and new meaning with humour and friendliness that some brands could otherwise struggle with. A dry post becomes light-hearted – ‘cute’ even – and prompts responses with similar from followers. Anything that makes a business more approachable is good right? Right. Except when the business gets it wrong.
