Government Communications Headquarters are launching a nationwide competition for schoolgirls aged 13 to 15, as part of a plan to recruit more female spies to its ranks.

The initiative is the first of its kind to be set up, with Spy chiefs hoping that it will attract future ‘Jane Bonds’ to help protect the UK from all online threats.

With women currently only making up 10% of the global cyber workforce, here’s to more #GIRLPOWER!

Keeping up with Kim, again

The queen of social took a three month hiatus from all social media platforms following the horrific Paris robbery back in October – but that still didn’t mean anyone forgot about her. We saw Kim Kardashian trending multiple times without any sign from the reality star herself, until now. On the 4th of January, she began sharing a series of personal pictures of her and her family across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

There was no real explanation to her sudden reappearance, but fans were happy to see her and it looked like she was happy to be back too…

On TfL reported that mounted police attended an emergency on Upper Street, Islington, which is when the accompanying horse tried to see if he could help.

Dippy is ducking out

Our beloved treasure, Dippy the Diplodocus dinosaur, will be leaving the Natural History Museum after a mammoth 112 years, to go on a final farewell tour before retiring.

People from far and wide took to Twitter to talk about the Jurassic star – some sad for his departure, others looking forward to seeing him closer to home in the near future.

Whilst he will be sorely missed, his space will be filled once again as he is replaced by a real skeleton of an 83ft (25.2m) female blue whale, weighing 4.5 tonnes. Wowsers.

This week also featured National Trivia Day, where we found out a whole lot of fascinating facts.

Queen Elizabeth II is  no stranger to the digital age. The first royal to send an e-mail way back in ‘76, Her Majesty embraced online culture once again in 2016 – social media, in particular – with her very first tweet on the official Royal Family Twitter account.

 

The Selfie of the Year 

Selfies bring people (and animals) together.

But the greatest selfie of 2016 did more than just that. When gymnasts Un-Jong from North Korea and Lee Eun-ju of South Korea posed together for a photo during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, they marked an iconic moment of unity between two countries.

As seen time and time again, love always wins.

 

Smells like School Spirit

The end of school holidays: every parent’s dream and every kid’s worst nightmare.

As Facebook newsfeeds were inundated with #BacktoSchool photos, one in particular got an A for effort:

Proving that a lucrative career can be built on social media expertise is none other than Johnny the cat, Bangkok’s feline superstar with his own bank account, a lead role in a Thai blockbuster and a casual 501k devoted followers on his Facebook page.

When 2016 suffered a setback in the form of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s break-up, it felt as though there was zero hope for the rest of us. But, as the saying goes, every cloud has a silver lining.
