Projects for the Community Fund have to demonstrate their volunteer or community involvement, be sustainable and supportive of community-based priorities under the key themes of:

growing our economy

protecting our environment

developing our communities

Almost 30 organisations applied, and 24 fingers was among 14 recipients. “We are thrilled to have secured funding from the Brentwood Community Fund,” said Emma Goode. “It will be put to excellent use too, helping more of the region’s entrepreneurs get back on their feet, get a business up and running or scale their existing business.”

The Fit for Business is a free, eight week online programme (free to Brentwood Borough residents), designed to help people kick-start or scale their business.

Do you have an idea that’s been bouncing around at the back of your mind for a while, but you’re not sure if you can make it a reality? Fit for Business could get you on your way.

We also live in the real world so that means not everyone gets a fair crack of the whip. Luckily, a supported internship programme from South Essex College is setting out to change that.

It’s aimed at students who have additional needs, such as learning difficulties, and are ready for the world of work, helping them take the next step into sustainable employment through internships that last between six months and one year.

We’re thrilled to say 24 fingers is taking part and will welcome bubbly Krista Hoare in the coming weeks. She has cerebral palsy, but isn’t letting it get in the way of her ambitions, and we reckon she’s going to fit right in – she’s enthusiastic and bubbly, loves shopping and is a big fan of musicals. Boooom.

Krista won’t be thrown in at the deep end either. She will be supported by an experienced job coach in the first six weeks of the internship programme, and they will work with us to create a specific support plan, aimed at meeting Krista’s particular goals.

“We’re delighted to be welcoming Krista to the 24 fingers family, and are really pleased to be able to support the South Essex College supported internship programme,” said Emma Goode. “We would urge other local businesses to get involved too – it’s a fantastic way to make the world of work more inclusive and give opportunities to people whose ideas and voices deserve to be heard.”

“I am thrilled and excited about joining 24 fingers, as it will help develop my social media skills as well as meeting new people along the way. Emma has welcomed me and made me feel right at home,” Krista said.

“We are overjoyed to have 24 fingers coming on board with us as a new employer,” added job coach Lisa Bennett. “Emma has been so supportive of the programme and Krista is really excited about her new role. This will truly be a rewarding and meaningful experience for Krista and for us here at South Essex College”.

Emma: Hi, how are you doing?

24 Fingers: Really good. It’s Friday, we’ve got the A-level results out of the way – I’m literally winning right now. Apart from the pandemic, Covid, global recession, kids’ futures screwed, apart from all that…

Emma: Apart from all that it’s all good.

24 fingers: Thank you very much for your time today, so shall we begin? What’s your favourite word?

Emma: This was a tricky one because I love words, but combobulated is my favourite word, as opposed to discombobulated. I love the way it sounds.

24 fingers: I think Kevin at Digital Technology Labs had one of the other.

Emma: Yes, it’s so cool. I love it.

24 fingers: What gets you up in the morning Emma?

Emma: A number of things. Firstly, the love of what I do. During the week when it’s a work day I get such joy from training and helping people, so that gets me out of bed. On a weekend, it’s usually my husband going: “are you ever getting up?”.

24 fingers: I can tell that passion, it’s brilliant. Okay, what do you truly think of social media? Be honest.

Emma: Originally I hated it, really just was not my thing at all. However, I’ve grown to love it and see the uses and benefits of it, so yeah, I tend to do quite a bit on social media, and it’s become my friend, from being like: ‘really, I’ve got to do that?’ to now I really love it. I love the groups where you can share things and be part of a community, especially during this time, it can be really powerful.

24 fingers: I think when it’s used for good it’s really powerful. Kindles or books?

Emma: Okay, always books – but saying that when I go on holiday, I don’t tend to have suitcases big enough to carry all the books I want to take. So my natural thing would be books, but Kindle means I can still take shoes on holiday AND have books.

24 fingers: I’ve never been a shoe girl but in lockdown I went a bit mad and bought seven pairs in one day. I don’t know what’s going on. I’m even buying stilettos and I don’t even wear them.

Emma: I don’t take so many away with me now, because on one holiday I took 12 pairs and we nearly didn’t get our luggage back. After that I’ve cut down. We’re obviously doing a swap here and you’re taking on my mantra.

24 fingers: Just for anyone thinking “oh my god seven pairs” they were all very cheap, about a fiver each, so I didn’t go hugely mad.

Emma: We need to go shopping, you and me.

24 fingers: Thelma and Louise in the shop store. What do you think is the biggest challenge to your industry, as you said, you’re a trainer and a coach.

Emma: In terms of the NLP industry, I think it’s still getting out there what NLP is and how powerful it is and how you can use it for good. I think that’s the biggest challenge because it sounds so vague I guess, because it’s performance psychology and applied neuroscience – what does all that mean? It’s getting that message out, which is why I work with people like you my lovely to get that message out clearer to people in terms of the benefits and what it can do for a person’s individual performance, life, business etc.

24 fingers: The thing about NLP is its tangible, it’s not woo. It’s actual techniques and strategies.

Emma: It’s tools, it’s techniques, it’s strategies, stuff you can apply practically every single day in your life and in your business. That’s the challenge to get out there and that’s what I’m personally working hard to do.

24 fingers: So, what did you want to be when you were growing up? Didn’t want to be a trainer, I guess?

Emma: No I didn’t even know what NLP was. I wanted to be a nurse, which is hilarious because I never really liked blood. I wanted to help people and I guess that bit hasn’t changed. I wanted to be a nurse but it’s much better that I help people in this way.

24 fingers: I can see that, in terms of the empathetic nature, being a nurse, I can see how much you really do want to help people change their lives, so that figures. What led you to your current career?

Emma: It was 10 years ago last month that I discovered NLP. I was working in local government and I had a corporate job, many people that I’ve talked to had that sort of background. I had a difficult situation that was going on in my personal life as well as my career, and I discovered NLP and it completely changed everything for me. I left Essex six years ago to write children’s books, and this was what NLP was about for me, to give me choice. I transformed what I did, my career went from strength to strength while I was there then I changed to go set up my own business, and then it was through demand. People asking for NLP and that’s why I started the training company. The plan wasn’t to launch a training company, it was just to write children’s books, and then all of this has just come from it. It was almost like the universe or whatever you like to believe, or serendipity, events that created it. It’s pretty cool.

24 fingers: It’s so funny, I was thinking about this at the weekend. When I was growing up I wanted to be a teacher and a writer. But I couldn’t have dealt with the noise volume in schools, but now I train and write social media so it all works out in the end, doesn’t it?

Emma: It does, absolutely.

24 fingers: So your favourite word was combobulated, can you use it in a sentence?

Emma: I think that a lot of people during Covid and lockdown have felt very discombobulated, and how it’s important to find some space so we can all become more combobulated within our lives.

24 fingers: Well done that woman. Now this is a hard one: can you make it rhyme?

Emma: I had to write this down. I’ve done a little rhyme for you: If you want to feel more combobulated, find some space that is less populated. Sit for a while under a tree, and give yourself time just to be.

24 fingers: I think you should become an author.

Emma: There’s an option.

24 fingers: So what advice would you give to younger Emma?

Emma: Just go for it, you’ve got this. It’s going to be an awesome ride, enjoy it and have fun. When you see the bigger picture, it’s like: ‘yeah!’. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

24 fingers: What’s the best thing anyone’s ever done for you? You’re going to say something really soppy now, aren’t you?

Emma: I am – it was when my husband proposed. I met him in a car accident, the whole circumstances around meeting him was hilarious-ish. So yeah, him proposing. It was the most amazing thing. We were out on a boat and it was very romantic.

24 fingers: Very sweet. What’s been your career-defining moment – you may not have had it yet?

Emma: Oh there are many. Finding NLP was one, because that completely shifted from being stagnant and stale to bringing life to be able to use it to help people. It’s got to be the career-defining moment. More recently it was setting up the limited company, I was a sole trader for a while. Those are the big things – leaving corporate to set up on your own – it was a seat-of-your-pants kind of time.

24 fingers: I don’t know what you’re talking about…

Emma: But it’s fun.

24 fingers: If you won a big award of some kind, who would you thank?

Emma: It has to be my husband John and my mum as well. My husband is amazing. He’s so supportive of everything I do. We’re chalk and cheese so it’s really fun. My mum is so supportive, she comes on my courses, she’s always there.

24 fingers: Love it. Can you give us a time-saver of the day?

Emma: I’m going to give you two: the first is know what you’re good at and not good at, and find someone to do the stuff you’re not good at or don’t like doing. The second is to-do lists. If I have one and cross it off I’m so much more efficient. I’m a list kind of girl.

24 fingers: You and Kathy are going to get on so well. I really agree with you about doing what you’re good at and following your strengths. I’m working on a project led by three of us and we’ve each divided what we’re good at and I can just go do what I do and be happy and not cock things up like I could when I’m doing things I’m not good at.

Emma: Absolutely, it takes hours, doesn’t it?

24 fingers: Where do you see the NLP industry in 24 months?

Emma: We’ve gone through quite a big change and shift because of Covid, so the awarding body are allowing us to do more online, and I can see that carrying on. Also being able to reach a wider audience and very much in terms of corporations. I do a lot of work with big corporations and local government, and they’re starting to see the power of NLP. I think the next 24 months is going to be fascinating to see how it’s going to become more and more embedded in big and small corporations because the success that it’s bringing through the projects I’m working on at the moment is super-exciting.

24 fingers: Where were you 24 months ago?

Emma: I’d just become a limited company, I was probably on holiday, knowing me, and I’d probably be training. In a face-to-face rather than using Zoom.

24 fingers: You’ve adapted really well. Tell me, what’s an interesting fact about your company?

Emma: The training company was created through demand, but we also have this other element that I write children’s books. So there’s a hidden element within Achieve Your Greatness. I wrote The Sock Monster Ate My Favourite Sock, The Adventures of Howard Huxley, we’ve got the little sock monster characters, and all of that cool, crazy stuff as well, the creative bit that people don’t know that much about.

24 fingers: If you could have a 24-minute Zoom call, who would it be with?

Emma: It would have to be with my dad. He’s no longer with us, so definitely him.

24 fingers: What’s the one word you’d like people to describe you with?

Emma: Just the one? These are so tricky – I’m a woman of words. Integrity is what I’d like.

24 fingers: I think you’re the third person on the bounce who’s said integrity and they were coaches and coming from a place of abundance. I think that’s brilliant. Would you mind taking a selfie for us? Brilliant. Emma, what’s your favourite social media campaign?

Emma: Of course yours, obviously, but I also like The Female Lead, they’ve got some interesting stuff on LinkedIn. I don’t always agree with all of it, but a lot of the content is really, really good.

24 fingers: What’s one quote that defines your work ethic?

Emma: It would be: “do to others what you would like them to do to you”, so all about kindness, compassion. I like to live and breathe that.

24 fingers: 100%. I think when you come from a place like that, you get it back. People are so willing to help in turn, rather than a place where you don’t want to share and it’s all about money – I’m not saying you can’t be profitable or make money, but when you’re shining with that different light, good things really happen, I feel.

Emma: It does and you attract like people. If I look at my clients, I love all my clients they’re the most amazing people. I got some beautiful reviews through on Google and it was just like: ‘oh my word’ and they’re such beautiful people, and I think if you run your business like that, that’s who you will attract, having those beautiful clients that you love to spend time with. They’re like a big family to me, we’ve got a big NLP community and it’s fun, right?

24 fingers: I was talking to someone this morning and they asked how I overcome ‘X’ objection and I said all the people around me wouldn’t even see that as a thing because we’re all like-minded individuals and we all want to give back. One of them is you. What’s been the best part of your day so far?

Emma: Obviously the interview here, and just before I had a quick chat with my mum. As I say, she’s really involved in the business, we’ve got a course coming up.

24 fingers: Finally, anything to plug?

Emma: Yeah I have indeed. I’ve got so many courses – on the 27th and 28th of August we’ve got Excellence in Teaching with NLP, it’s a course I put together with my colleague Elizabeth, and we’re basically bringing some tools to help in terms of performance and help people involved in looking after young people in terms of their education. Whether that’s home-schoolers, parents, teachers, tutors, it’s two days, online Zoom event, we’ve got a special offer because of Covid, to help give them some tools to help their own management in terms of communication, behaviours and emotions. I’m super-excited about it, it’s going to be an awesome two days. That’s my plug.

24 fingers: I think I know someone who would really enjoy it. I think teachers going back in September – it’s going to be really difficult for them in terms of children really since March and April haven’t had a consistent framework and there’s a lot of time and stuff to regroup and it’s going to be challenging for teachers and anything that you can give them to ease their path back into schools is going to really benefit them and the children.

Emma: We’ve widened it out so if parents, who are involved in homework, can make that easier, that’s got to be a good thing, right?

24 fingers: I’m just pleased my homework days are done. Emma, thank you so much for your time.

Emma: It’s been awesome, thank you.

More than half a century later, the playing field between the sexes has levelled out a bit, and in an age of celebrity brands and social media influencers, it’s easy to think you can be fit for business without putting in much effort.

The reality – particularly for girls and young women – can be quite different. Look at Beyonce. She’s a fierce, independent woman in charge of a creative empire that would make most City businessmen blush and, quite rightly, has the world at her feet.

Did she achieve this success without breaking a sweat? Not. A. Chance. As a young woman of colour, she fought to be taken seriously first as an artist, then as a businesswoman. She may be sitting pretty now, but the singer, actor, fashion icon AND mum-of-three knew she had to graft to get where she is today.

If you (or your daughter, sister, niece, granddaughter, insert other nouns here) are itching to follow in Beyonce’s footsteps and build your own brand or run your own business in the future, then here is a heads up: we’ve got this.

24 fingers (us), Little Piggy (Kathy Ennis) aka 24 Degrees have teamed up with BlitzFitMe (Oliver Berquez) to create Fit for Business, a training programme for young women aged between 16 and 21 who are looking to be their own Queen B, but may not be certain how to get started.

Where school and college – even university – ends, the Fit for Business programme begins, equipping 24 young women from Essex with the skills they need to keep their bodies strong and healthy, as well as turning a smart business idea into a money-making reality.

The exercise and nutrition component of the Active Essex-backed Fit for Business programme will help participants:

• Improve their fitness levels – strength, stamina, endurance and posture
• Have a positive body image
• Get better sleep, have more energy and reduce fatigue
• Learn how to create healthy and tasty meals
• Improve their focus and achieve more

Meanwhile, the entrepreneur component, led by 24 Degrees, will help participants:

• Understand the basics of starting a business
• Learn how to take an idea and create a business plan
• Create products and services
• How to market a business on social media
• Build a personal profile online

As well offering guidance about personal health and business skills, Fit for Business also offers guidance and support via a range of activities including:

• Coach-led online fitness sessions every week
• Weekly expert-led business start-up training sessions;
• Access to the BlitzFitMe app and all its features including: home workouts to accompany the coach-led sessions, blogs/articles, recipes, and social media templates and content ideas;
• Workbooks and support resources;
• Daily support from our experts;
• Weekly feedback and check-ins.

Emma Goode and Kathy Ennis, co-founders of 24 Degrees, said about the launch of Fit for Business: “We’re so privileged to be able to share the lessons we’ve learned in business, especially with young women.

“We’re really looking forward to seeing what they will achieve and how far they will go after taking part in the Fit for Business programme.”

Oliver Berquez adds: “I’m super excited to be working with Emma and Kathy as I know what a difference improving someone’s health, fitness and nutrition can have on someone’s life. It’s so important that people are fit for business, and by helping the next generation of entrepreneurs learn these vital skills, this programme will have a huge, positive impact on their performance, both personally and professionally.”

The first course will begin on Monday 14th September, 2020, and places are being snapped up fast.

Thanks to generous sponsors Sport England, which has provided 75% of the funding, the 20-week online programme costs £75. That’s the equivalent of £3.75 a week – not bad for something that could set you on a path to being your own boss for the price of a cappuccino.

Want to sign up and get ahead of the pack?

24 fingers is proud to introduce Emily Palmer, author of Scrambled Heads, a book created to help teach children about mental health. During Mental Health Awareness Week, 24 fingers’ founder Emma Goode spoke to Emily about the inspiration behind the book and the social media campaign supporting it.

Emma Goode: Emily, I understand you’ve been through your own struggles with mental health. What part did that play in inspiring you to write this fantastic book?

Emily Palmer: Yes, it inspired me greatly. I remember going to hospital as a child for minor operations and seeing children’s books about going into hospital and what to expect. They had been specifically designed to help young people understand that what was happening was normal and allay their fears, but there was nothing like that for mental health. It made me realise there wasn’t anything available to offer help and support. And you know, not everyone has the guts to ask if their feelings and thoughts are normal.

Emma: What support do you feel is missing for young children?

Emily: Again, looking back, I had struggled early on as a teenager because I had no idea what was going on really. I’d never heard of the term ‘mental health’. I think we need to educate children from a really young age, at primary and junior schools. We teach children how to brush their teeth, how to get dressed, that if something hurts, you go to your parents. Mental health needs to be treated in the same way; the level of education needs to be the same.

Emma: What do you feel is the biggest block stopping a child asking for support?

Emily: I think a mixture of shyness and embarrassment, especially if you really don’t know what the thoughts and feelings actually are. It can be hard to explain. And there’s still a stigma attached to it. It’s not as easy to see as a broken arm.

Emma: Scrambled Heads has received a lot of support. Can you tell us a little more about who helped you along the way?

Emily: It was really important for me to know the book was as accurate as possible so that as many people as possible could take something from it. I spoke with lots of parents and educators to ask if this was something they could use. It was great to have their advice and input. They’re always looking for relevant content to use, especially content that speaks in a language that children can relate to.

Emma: How has social media helped?

Emily: It’s been one of the most vital parts actually because word of mouth can only take you so far. Lots of celebrities have come on board and lent their support including Denise Welch, Nick Knowles, Alastair Campbell, Dr Christian, Lorraine Kelly to name a few. That’s really helped open doors and increase the amount of people who get to hear about the book, across all different walks of life. This week, it’s also been featured by Huffington Post and BuzzFeed – the reaction has been fantastic. As we get nearer to the 1,000 copies sold milestone, I keep thinking that every book sold is helping at least one more child.

Emma: That’s incredible, really great work. Has the feedback you’ve received inspired you to do more around this issue?

Emily: The book has inspired me in knowing that something so simple has made such a difference to people’s lives. I’m now thinking about how I can use my experience to help people in the future. It’s not an issue that’s going to be solved overnight.

Scrambled Heads can be purchased via Amazon here. We wish Emily all the very best with the book and thank her for her efforts in raising awareness around mental health issues.

The post Meet the inspirational teen behind Scrambled Heads, a children’s guide to mental health first appeared on 24 fingers.

The post Meet the inspirational teen behind Scrambled Heads, a children’s guide to mental health appeared first on 24 fingers.

Kevin Mincher, founder of Unstoppable Teen, is on a mission to help 1,000,000 young people experience a better quality of life. That’s a whole lot of zeros.

So exactly how does Kevin help the yoof of today and what does he think the government *could do better*? Time to go back to school with our favourite Blades supporter…

#1. So, what’s your favourite word?

Unstoppable.

#2. What gets you up in the morning?

A dogged determination to make the world a better place. I feel that teenagers are often overlooked by political parties and under-represented largely because they have no voting power. In their adolescent years, young people are often demonised because they can start to rebel – but someone needs to stand up and fight for their rights. That someone is me. I want to help education reform and help our schools give students the skills they will need to experience a brilliant life in the modern world.

What will they need in 10 years’ time to lead a happy life? Yes, of course, they need to be able to read and write, but so much time and taxpayers’ money is wasted on irrelevant things they don’t need to know. That means there’s no time left in the curriculum or money left in the budget to give our youngsters what they actually need to know. Teenagers don’t lobby and they can’t vote. Someone has to be that voice. That’s where I come in.

#3. What do you truly, honestly think of social media?

I truly, honestly hate it. Probably because I don’t know how to use it properly.

#4. Good thing we love it then. Kindles or books?

Books. I just like the feel, the smell, I like being able to see where I am in the book and reference the material later, like a visual marker. I don’t want to electrocute myself in the bath either.

#5. What do you think is the biggest challenge to the industry right now?

The traditionalists. Closed-minded people who are locked into an outdated education system and its predispositions. Policy makers who don’t have the vision to reinvent schools and bring them into the modern world. Politicians who live in fear of unions and voters who won’t bring about the change that’s required in case they’re not re-elected. The information that kids need is out there – the adults are the ones stopping them from receiving it.

#6. What did you want to be when you were growing up?

I wanted to be a footballer. I was in Sheffield United’s youth programme at 11, kicked out at 12, re-joined at 13, ended up getting a back injury at 17. I was quickly over the disappointment because I discovered a passion and a unique mission I wanted to fulfil that was over and above being a footballer.

#7. The Blades’ loss is our gain, Kevin. What led you to your current career?

There was an inner sense of purpose that I needed to contribute something and make a difference. I experienced a series of uncontrollable events that led me to that conclusion. My parents split up when I was a teenager. That led them to seek ways to overcome the pain, heal the wounds and move forward with their lives. There were self-help materials scattered around the house – that got me interested in personal development and self-improvement. My parents had big missions to fulfil themselves, which undoubtedly made me want to contribute something important too.

Mum was a NHS health visitor; she wanted to have a job that helped people. She can be quite fiery and often spoke out against social injustices. Through her career she helped hundreds of young families in deprived communities. Her caring nature and desire to make a difference with people in need was an inspiration to me. Dad was a school teacher and then a brilliant sports coach who specialised in working with young people. Dozens of the teenagers he worked with went on to have successful pro careers competing on the international stage. So he inspired me too. Mix my parents’ genes, the caring nature, fighting against social injustice and the teacher, and you get me.

I also got lucky in my teen years because I was signed by a football club that had a holistic approach to improving performance. Sheffield United had the first full-time sports psychologist in the Premier League, a nutritionist, a sports scientist, video analysis and other systems in place that are now commonplace in pro sports. We weren’t just kicking a ball around. The manager and coaches realised there were many different ways to improve performance over and above just dong the obvious. That had a massive impact on me.

In fact, Tony Robbins came to Sheffield United and held one of his first ever UK seminars with the team as a free session in return for the PR and publicity to help promote his public seminars. That exposed me to something new again and helped me evolve my philosophy.

#8. Can you use your favourite word in a sentence?

Yes. Unstoppable Teen is on a mission to help one million young people experience a better quality of life.

#9. Now can you make it rhyme?

Unstoppable dundoppable – that’s how you rhyme unstoppable!

#10. Kinda. What advice would you give to your younger self?

I think I would say have the faith that it’s all going to be ok. I had so much uncertainty in my teenage years; there was great chaos from the ages of 13 to 17. I would want to have said, “You’re OK, and you’re going to be alright. Trust yourself, have faith in yourself and the universe. It’s going to work out fine.”

#11. And so it has. What’s the best thing anyone’s ever done for you?

Impossible to pick between my parents really because they both give me way more love, support, encouragement and wisdom that anyone could ever reasonably expect. Whatever I do, whether it’s good, bad or indifferent, is viewed without judgement and without prejudice. They genuinely provide the most unconditional love that I have experienced. Everything I do comes from that. Anything is possible for a young person who is given that foundation. You’re secure and feel free to pursue your goals without fear of being judged or belittled by those you care about most.

#12. May everyone experience that kind of support. Tell us, what’s been your ‘career-defining’ moment?

Haven’t had it yet – that’s what keeps me motivated and keeps driving me forward.

#13. If you won a big award of some kind, who would you thank?

First up would be my parents and my family. They provided the values and foundations that stood me in good stead.

Then I would thank all of my teachers and my team members. They helped me learn important lessons and provided the support I needed every step of the way. You have to have a good team because all success is a team effort. Sometimes it feels wrong just for one person to receive an award – everyone has contributed to the results. The award would have to be for my family and Unstoppable Teen – not for me.

#14. Teamwork makes the dream work. Can you give us a timesaver of the day?

Switch off social media. Switch off auto-notifications for email. Only check them at the beginning, middle and the end of the day. Perhaps more importantly, when you go to bed, know what your top three priorities are for the next day, then when you wake up, pursue those priorities with gusto.

#15. Where do you see your industry in 24 months?

I think the state education system will largely be the same, because it’s still being run by people who seem committed to implementing out-of-date policies. More teachers are likely to be stressed and leaving the industry. And of course, there’s the skills gap in terms of what the kids will leave education and transition into work with. 88% of businesses leaders already say school leavers are not ready for the world of work. If fundamental changes aren’t made to what we teach and how we teach the youth generation, our communities and economy are likely to deteriorate.

We know that communities and the economy are changing significantly. With the effects of globalisations, the rise of robots, AI, and other factors, the skills gap is likely to widen. With little innovation in the national curriculum, our economy and community outcomes will probably get worse before enough pain is experienced and real change is brought about.

On a more positive note, what’s happening in the world of online learning is very inspiring. As access to broadband spreads around the world, we’ll eventually arrive at a point where almost everyone on the planet will be able to learn almost anything, free of charge, without leaving their home. That has the potential to do great things for equality of opportunities and progression for humankind.

#16. Where were you 24 months ago?

I was living in Sheffield where I still am today, and I was just beginning to experiment with embedding essential life skills into the school curriculum. I was starting the first projects where I was training teachers, rather than working directly with students. Since then, we’ve learned much about how schools can help their students master evidence-based strategies that scientists have discovered lead to better life outcomes. I want to create a self-sustaining model that schools can implement without us being there.

#17. What’s an interesting fact about your company?

We’re in our 20th year and to date, we’ve helped more than 300,000 young people through 250 schools colleges and universities.

#18. Hi-5 to that. If you could have a 24-minute Skype chat with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?

The Secretary of State for Education. The Rt Hon Justine Greening MP. I’d ask her to do the right thing. Stop worrying about votes, modernise the education system. I’d ask her to consider what our young citizens will need to master in order to experience happy lives and re-establish our great nation in the modern world? Then I’d ask her to create an education system that helps young people master those competencies. If she needed help, I’ll gladly volunteer.

#19. What’s one word you’d want people to describe you with?

Integrity.

#20. Would you mind taking a selfie for us?

Here you go.

#21. What’s your favourite Twitter handle or social media campaign?

I like campaigns that give followers a free educational series or challenge which is designed to help participants improve their results. This approach removes cost barriers, has the potential to build your following quickly, generates goodwill and helps the world become a better place.

#22. Another hi-5 to that. What’s one quote that defines your work ethic?

“Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality. It is the words that speak boldly of your intentions. And the actions which speak louder than the words. It is making the time when there is none. Coming through time after time after time, year after year after year. Commitment is the stuff character is made of; the power to change the face of things. It is the daily triumph of integrity over scepticism.” ~ Abraham Lincoln

#23. Abraham, you rock. What’s been the best part of your day?

This conversation actually. It can be easy to get so caught up in the business of the day that I rarely get time to reflect. Every gap in the day can be filled with stuff on my smartphone. Your questions have prompted me to take time out and reflect.

#24. We aim to please. Finally, anything to plug?

If you are a teenager and you want a brilliant life, or if you want to help a teenager have a fantastic future, you’ll want to subscribe to our free newsletter and weekly podcast because they are packed with simple insights you can use to deal with common youth problems and achieve more than most people think is possible.

It’s here — the UK government’s much-anticipated digital strategy. And if there’s one thing we can hope for, it’s that the vision for Britain’s digital future seems very, very bright.

This Wednesday, in a session led by chief executive of AI firm BenevolentAI, Jerome Pesenti, and computer scientist Dame Wendy Hall,) saw the government reveal their plans to prioritise artificial intelligence and skills in their initiative to promote Britain as a world-leading digital economy. The excitement was palpable:

8:30am #UKDigitalStrategy launches. Skills and free training featuring high on the agenda. pic.twitter.com/jzy9oErx9h

— John Brown (@brownbare) March 1, 2017

https://twitter.com/Barclays_pa/status/836940918213263364

With a proposal to offer over millions of individuals and businesses free digital skills training opportunities, and the likes of corporate giants Google, Barclays and Lloyds Banking Group backing the campaign, the investment into a powerful digital workforce and future technologies is definitely promising. Whether or not this bold vision is transformed into a reality?

As for the government’s £20m venture into artificial intelligence research, robots, driverless cars and supercomputers that can spot tumours more accurately than qualified doctors could soon become normality. Experts believe “£654 billion can be added to the British economy by 2035 if the growth potential in AI is achieved”.

In the wake of Britain’s lengthy and as-yet ambiguous exit from the EU, the government’s vow to spearhead the digital revolution are assertive. Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Karen Bradley assured that this digital strategy “sets a path to make Britain the best place to start and grow a digital business, trial a new technology, or undertake advanced research as part of the government’s plan to build a modern, dynamic and global trading nation”.

Our thoughts? Viva la (digital) revolución!

The post Make Britain Digital Again first appeared on 24 fingers.

The post Make Britain Digital Again appeared first on 24 fingers.

We all know that social media can be a great way to communicate with others from around the world, share thoughts, opinions and photos with each other and discover new things. But for children, it can often be dangerous territory.

Generation Z – better known as ‘Generation Social’ – may be racking up hundreds of likes but they are also making themselves extremely vulnerable by utilising location services, public profiles and sharing personal information online. It is causing so much concern that towards the end of last year, the Children’s commissioner Anne Longfield called for there to be greater representation in UK government to protect children online and on social media. She also called for there to be a broader digital citizenship programme, obligatory in every school from ages four to 14. Many other educational representatives have been asking government to consider “implementing legislation protecting children’s privacy and data online, similar to what is being proposed by the EU” after a year-long study published highlighted the serious dangers children face on social media. It is rapidly becoming a very worrying issue.

Whilst most kids seem more tech-savvy than their parents, many of them do not read the terms and conditions they agree to when signing up to social media sites – and others simply do not understand them. They regularly and unknowingly leave themselves at risk of cyber-bullying, harassment and exposure to inappropriate content, as well as their personal information being publicly released or even sold.

Deputy Headteacher of The Charter School, Simon Williams, recognises the dangers kids are facing online:

“We regularly remind our students and parents about safe use of the internet and especially social media. It is fascinating that when students have found themselves in difficulties, even though they knew the dangers, they had gone ahead and behaved riskily regardless – such is the draw of this medium.”

Looking at the terms and conditions of these social media platforms, the small print can even be difficult for some adults to understand. Whilst it is clear on most platforms that services can only be used by those 13 or over, alarming studies indicate that children as young as seven are using these platforms, with 92% reportedly online “daily”. This recently led to a lawyer rewriting Instagram’s terms and conditions so that children could understand them, surprising many. However, Instagram defended their platform;

“We go beyond our terms and guidelines to offer in-app safety and privacy help – from reporting, to industry-leading comment tools and self-help resources. We have also produced a guide for parents to help them talk to their teenagers about internet safety.”

Snapchat have taken a stand for children by attempting to simplify their terms:

“We’ve drafted these Terms of Service (which we call the “Terms”) so you’ll know the rules that govern our relationship with you. Although we have tried our best to strip the legalese from the Terms, there are places where these Terms may still read like a traditional contract. There’s a good reason for that: These Terms do indeed form a legally binding contract between you and Snap Inc. So please read them carefully.”

Is this really enough though? Surely there needs to be tighter regulations, more support for children and parents on social media safety, and better guidance on where your information goes once it is uploaded.

What are your thoughts on protecting children on social media? Do you think more action needs to be taken? Share with us on Twitter @24_fingers, we’d love to hear your views and any situations you’ve experienced.

The post Children and the dangers of social media first appeared on 24 fingers.

The post Children and the dangers of social media appeared first on 24 fingers.

On Thursday, we left 24 fingers Towers and ventured to Dulwich to attend The Charter School‘s annual careers fair.

The Charter School in South East London is a non-selective community school with students from a diverse range of backgrounds. It is in the top 100 state schools nationally for its GCSE results and recently won a local award for the high level of attainment of its disadvantaged pupils.

The careers fair was designed to give Year 9-13 students the opportunity to be able to speak to expert advisers who work in their fields of interest (in the case of 24 fingers, digital marketing), with a view on understanding what they will need to do to in order to pursue a successful career in their chosen industry.

The Charter School were especially keen to have more representatives from the digital industries to speak to the students, as it is estimated that over 46,000 new jobs will be created in the digital sector in London alone over the next decade. That’s where we came in.

We showed the pupils what it is like to tweet all day for a living, and what else goes on behind the scenes (trust us, it’s a lot more than you might think). But it wasn’t just the kids getting schooled – they taught us a thing or two as well.

According to a study conducted last year, 71% of teens use more than one social media site on a regular basis – no wonder they have been named #GenerationSocial. With this in mind, we had the pupils take over our Twitter for the day to share their opinions on social media.
