#1. So, what’s your favourite word?

Why.

#2. Why not. What gets you up in the morning?

The sun.

#3. What do you truly, honestly think of social media?

I think there are pros and cons really. I just feel like it can help people progress but it can go the other way and stunt people’s growth.

Books.

#5.  Agreed. What do you think is the biggest challenge to your industry right now?

I think it’s so competitive. It can be hard to stand out.

#6.  Cream rises, honey. What did you want to be when you were growing up?

An artist or a shoe designer. Or an interior designer.

#7. So basically anything with the word designer in it :). What led you to your current career?

I started drawing young and just loved it. Just loved that feeling of being creative.

Why is the sky blue?

Why-spy with my little eye.

#10. Clever. What advice would you give to your younger self?

I would say be more confident in who you are. Especially when it comes to social media. It puts you down.

#11. What’s the best thing anyone’s ever done for you?

My mum and dad are so supportive. I don’t need anything apart from them being there.

#12. Nice. Tell us, what’s been your ‘career-defining’ moment?

Roots in Upminster messaged me about doing a piece for them. That was my first commission.

#13. If you won a big award of some kind, who would you thank?

My mum and dad.

#14. Can you give us a timesaver of the day?

Don’t watch Love Island.

#15. Whaaat? It’s the actual law in Essex. Where do you see your industry in 24 months?

I would like to be a art curator, of a space or venue.

#16. Where were you 24 months ago?

I was at Loughborough Uni, studying fine art.

#17. What’s an interesting fact about your company?

I can deadlift 70kgs.

#18. #GirlsWhoLift. If you could have a 24-minute Skype chat with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?

Nelson Mandela. He had so much to share. People like that, their minds are so big.

#19. What’s one word you’d want people to describe you with?

Kind.

On Instagram, it would be Architectural Digest.

The master has failed more times than the beginner has even tried.

His career at the highest level of international media encompassed not only press photography, notably capturing shots of the British Royal Family including the Queen, and intimate images of celebrities such as Elton John and Amy Winehouse, but two long-term photographic documentaries, three political campaigns, and being chosen to be the personal photographer to a Prime Minister. BOOOM. He shares his story below, plus we even managed to get a selfie from the man himself. Tidy.

#1. What’s your favourite word?

Serendipity.

#2. What gets you up in the morning?

Knowing that I was lucky enough to wake up.

#3. What do you truly, honestly think of social media?

I think it’s amazing, it’s great but it can also be bad. It can be used for great things and also really bad things.

#4. Kindles or books?

Kindles definitely. And you know why. I don’t have to read books any more. I can just the adjust the contrast, change the size of the type, it’s great!

#5. What do you think is the biggest challenge to your industry right now?

Cellphones! It’s too easy now – everyone can do it (Ed’s note: or thinks they can :))

#6. Totes. What did you want to be when you were growing up?

Footballer. Like most kids.

#7. The Gunners’ loss is our gain. What led you to your current career?

Destiny.

#8. Can you use your favourite word in a sentence?

I feel everything is serendipity.

#9. Now can you make it rhyme?

Serendipity makes life less shitty.

#10. You’re a man after our own heart. What advice would you give to your younger self?

Eat more carefully.

#11. Again, we’re hearing you. What’s the best thing anyone’s ever done for you?

My mum for not listening to the doctor and not registering me as blind.

#12. Tell us, what’s been your ‘career-defining’ moment?

Being  Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel’s personal photographer.

#13. If you won a big award of some kind, who would you thank?

My parents. I actually won a Young Leadership award and I thanked them then too.

#14. Can you give us a timesaver of the day?

Now, if I actually had timesavers, I’d put them in practice.

#15. Our friends have lots – have some. Where do you see your industry in 24 months?

In a worse situation than it is right now – people just aren’t interested in quality any more.

#16. We are! Where were you 24 months ago?

In the toilet. Metaphorically speaking. My mum was sick, it was an awful time. Today feels very differently, completely the opposite.

#17. What’s an interesting fact about you?

I’m legally blind. And it doesn’t get more interesting than that. Here’s my interesting story.

Underfunding, a lack of opportunities and a lack of signposting, especially in Essex. We want people to be able to discover what’s going on locally from a creative point of view and get involved.

A fashion designer which Lisa and I did actually when we made streetwear.

#7. What led you to your current career?

We sidelined really from using our artwork in streetwear to using it on flat surfaces including wall coverings.

Proper naughty.

I love so and so  but he’s a proper name-dropper.

#10. Bosh. What advice would you give to your younger self?

Stop pissing about and get on it with.

#11. What’s the best thing anyone’s ever done for you?

I have to say Lisa for putting up with me as her business partner for 17 years and not killing me in the process.

#12. Tell us, what’s been your ‘career-defining’ moment?

In our previous lives in streetwear, we were stocked in Japan, Europe, independent, trendy shops in the UK, and at that time, we probably felt we’d made it. Then the recession came along. Nowadays, I’d say it was the time Emma St Roas, the tattooed rockabilly blogger from Frock It, branded herself for life with our branding, the butterfly skull tattoo. What happened next was that she went to one of our favourite rock’n’roll haunts, Hotel Pelirocco,  and saw our wallpaper in the bar area. What are the chances eh.

#13. Indeed. If you won a big award of some kind, who would you thank?

Our friends and family for always being there, patiently waiting for overnight success.

#14. Next year, Maj, next year. Can you give us a timesaver of the day?

While you’re waiting for your espresso to brew, check your social media.

#15. Where do you see your industry in 24 months?

More public art on a larger scale.We’re seeing art being used in different ways;  holographs/projections and it feels art is becoming part of the actual space. It may be on a temporary basis but that’s also ok; it then becomes ephemeral. And while it is in situ, it can also change.  For special projects, we can even supply our wall coverings with magnets – it means in a retail space, an environment can change really rapidly. No chance for anything to get boring nowadays.

#16. Where were you 24 months ago?

Lisa and I were at my mum’s place in Spain with Lisa’s other half and four kids (her two boys and my two girls), looking up at blue skies from the local village’s mountaintop pool.

#17. What’s an interesting fact about your company?

Our work ‘New Forest’ is part of the Colour in Romford project where we had the chance to design a street art mural for the town. This led to a collaboration with The Leather Satchel Company, which we’d been dreaming of for a long time.

#18. If you could have a 24-minute Skype chat with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?

James Dean. I’d stare into his eyes. He wouldn’t have to speak.

#19. We’re hearing you. What’s one word you’d want people to describe you with?

Dynamic.

Sure.

To mark this milestone in the history of LGBT+ equality, Firrell has created six new public artworks for digital billboards in England and Wales, supported by Peter Tatchell, world-renowned human rights and social justice campaigner and leading digital media companies, Clear Channel Outdoor and Primesight. 

Throughout this month-long campaign, the billboards will encourage conversation and debate around gender labels, and what those labels mean in today’s world. As Firrell says: “No other human rights movement has seen so much progress in the space of 50 years. That is to be celebrated. And the activism that made that possible should be acknowledged. But there is always more to be done. How we think about gender now will liberate – or blight – people’s lives for the next 50 years.”

This nationwide out-of-home billboard takeover shares the messages and demands of 1960s activists and radical thinkers of the time across six billboards. Similarly, in keeping with the decade, the six billboards are black and white, and use a popular font of the time, Univers Extra Black Extended.

The release of the Remember 1967 digital billboards follows an artist-led Gender Think-In, held in June 2017. London’s iconic Lloyd’s building played host to 200 leaders across business, culture and policy, who came together to discuss and share views on the value of gender labels and the concept of having a ‘gender tender’ approach, a kinder, softer way of thinking. The results of this think-in will be published by Martin Firrell as a policy paper, mapping out an alternative future for gender.

24 fingers will be working to amplify the Remember 1967 campaign across social media, encouraging conversation and debate. Within the first 24-hour period, the posts have achieved a potential reach of over 350,000 social media users. You can join in the conversation by using the hashtag #remember1967 on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

About the artist: Martin Firrell has been dubbed a ‘cultural activist’, known for provoking public conversations of social value and credited by the Guardian as ‘one of London’s most influential public artists’. Recent projects include ‘Fires Ancient’ and ‘Fires Modern’, two simultaneous projections – on the National Theatre Southbank façade and the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral – commissioned by Artichoke for London’s commemoration of the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire. ‘Remember 1967’ builds on the success of Firrell’s 2016 work ‘All Identity Is Constructed’ which called for greater identity equality using digital billboards and social media with a reach of 3 million people across the UK. The project won the 2016 UK industry award for best digital campaign.
