But, just when you thought the trend of here-today-gone-tomorrow content was done with, along comes Twitter with its oddly named Fleets.

A squished-up version of ‘fleeting moments’, Fleets last just 24 hours, and are to Twitter what Stories are to LinkedIn and Instagram and, more recently, Vanish mode is to Messenger and Instagram. Or what they all are to Snapchat.

Confused? Let us explain. The boffins at Twitter wanted to give new or shy users the chance to dip a toe in the platform’s conversational waters, without getting bogged down in likes and retweets.

With us so far? Jolly good. Now, this is where Fleets come in. Users can post text, or reactions to tweets with the tweet attached, as well as photos and videos, all of which can be personalised with snazzy backgrounds or fonts.

Here’s where you can go a bit cross-eyed if you don’t pay attention. You can reply to Fleets by sending a private Direct Message, but only if you follow the person you’re contacting and they follow you OR if the person you want to reply to has their Direct Messages set to open.

“We’ve learned that some people feel more comfortable joining conversations on Twitter with this ephemeral format, so what they’re saying lives just for a moment in time,” wrote Joshua Harris, director of design, and Sam Haveson, product manager, in a blog.

We’ll have to wait and see if Fleets bring a host of new blood to the platform, but the feature certainly has got its work cut out for it with the sudden rush of short-term competition. Tell us which are your favourites and we’ll tell you ours…

History lovers may be drooling at the discovery, but when it comes to making things that last, social media seems to be heading in the opposite direction. Take Facebook, for instance, and its new Vanish mode.

Developed for its Messenger and Instagram platforms, it allows users to write messages that automatically delete after they have been read and the recipient has left the chat.

“We designed Vanish mode with safety and choice in mind, so you control your experience,” said Bridget Pujals, Messenger Product Manager, and Manik Singh, Instagram Product Manager.

The tool, which is scheduled to come to Europe after its US debut, can be activated by swiping up on a smartphone in an existing chat thread. To go back to the original messaging mode, simply swipe up again.

One feature we particularly like is if anyone takes a screenshot of a chat in Vanish mode, users are automatically notified. Stalkers, take note.

Messenger and Instagram aren’t the only ones jumping on Snapchat’s here-today-gone-tomorrow concept. Facebook recently enabled WhatsApp messages to disappear after seven days, LinkedIn launched Stories, as it aims to shed its stuffy image, while Twitter’s Fleets, which the platform said “help start conversations” also last for just 24 hours.

Our takeaway: ‘time’ to make your first impression count,

We’re 24 fingers, a digital marketing agency and a proud member of the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce, Excel Business Networking Group, the Trusted Business Community and the Organisation for Responsible Businesses. To make sure you end up with a lip-smacking Chablis rather than a vin de table you wouldn’t use as petrol, here’s our top 10 creative apps to make your content sparkle, as recommended by Facebook.

Ripl

They say: Layer animated templates on top of photos

We say: This creative app not only makes videos from your own photos (so you get the shot you actually want), it’s customisable, can be linked to all your social media accounts and enables scheduled posting. What’s not to love?

Videoshop

They say: Combine photos and videos, experiment with stop- motion, resize and edit videos

We say: Embrace your inner Steven Spielberg with this smart editing tool. Add your own soundtrack or sound effects, include subtitles or merge several videos into one, and then share them across your social media contacts.

Unfold

They say: Create stories with multiple photos

We say: If you want to give your ads and videos a sophisticated edge, then look no further. Unfold offers a range of cool templates and curated fonts. There are filters and effects too, but think Vogue rather than Snapchat.

Mojo

They say: Create stories from video templates

We say: It’s the only one on our list that’s NOT Android compatible, but the easy-to-download, customisable creative app comes with more than 50 templates and text styles. They’re updated every month, so your content will always have a fresh feel. Like the others, you can share your creations to all social media platforms.

Adobe Spark Post

They say: Transform photos with design and animation templates

We say: Even if you’ve never held a video camera in your life, you can make smart ads using your own photos or animated stickers from GIPHY. There’s a range of customisation options available, so you can play around and find the effect that best suits your business. Boooooom.

Adobe Photoshop Mix

They say: Cut and combine images

We say: Once you’ve mastered Spark Post, this is probably your next step. You can cut out and mash-up bits of different images, as well as blend layers and apply looks, whether you’re using an Apple or Android device. Excitingly, the app also integrates with Adobe Creative Cloud, giving you access to tools including Photoshop and Lightroom.

Boomerang

They say: Create short looping videos

We say: There is so much fun to be had with this Instagram app, once you get started you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it. Simply film a moving object or take a video selfie, then hit one button and the software does the rest: creating a mini looped video from 10 photos that you can share on Facebook and Instagram.

Plotaverse

They say: Add motion to still images

We say: WOW. There’s no other word for the stunning effects this app can help you create. It’s all about stopping social media users in their scrolling tracks with the hypnotic movements in ads using this app. If you’re looking for something completely different, this is it.

Quik

They say: Animate your photos to music

We say: Well isn’t this nifty? You can combine up to 75 of your own images or video clips with your favourite tunes (or over 100 free songs from the app) and voila – instant shareable content. It’s customisable with text overlays, you can choose from 23 themes and it automatically turns on the audio when it hears voices. Smart.

Facebook Ads Manager

They say: An all-in-one tool for advertisers of any experience level.

We say: So, you’ve made your content, but now what? If you’re looking to run a campaign across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger or Audience Network, then this is a good place to start. There’s help with everything from creating ad campaigns to monitoring how they’re faring.

But don’t worry. If it all looks a bit complicated, book a discovery call with us at 24 fingers and we’ll guide you every step of the way.

If you’re a social media guru and a whizz with words, but have had your genius hindered by the 140-character limit instilled by Twitter, then boy have we got news for you: Twitter has recently announced that you will now be able to tweet up to 280 characters!

Twitter initially implemented the 140-character limit to resemble the format of SMS text messages, which is how tweets were distributed before the release of mobile apps. However, following some research, they have discovered that those tweeting in English often hit the 140-character limit. Consequently, they recognised that this isn’t the result of expertly succinct journalism, and have acknowledged the need to increase the length of their character limit to allow their uses to be more expressive. Whilst the character increase is said to be on a trial period, there is a firm belief that the new limit will benefit the Twitter community and therefore become a mainstay. RIP short tweets.

So, there you have it, you no longer have to sit there for hours trying to work out which grammatical atrocity to commit in order for your tweet to be Twitter-feed ready. Time to celebrate with a doubly awesome tweet I think! #280

Instagram 800 million users

Instagram have announced that their monthly users have reached the 800 million mark, a whopping 100 million up from their previous statistics from April. What’s more is that over 500 million of these users pop in to use the Facebook-owned app on a daily basis.

This is the fastest growth period Instagram have experienced and follows the announcement that Instagram now have 2 million advertisers. Doing well it seems. The hugely impressive stat has been put largely down to video, as the production of video through the app has quadrupled over the past year.

For example, Stories (Instagram’s Snapchat clone) – Good Evening Mr. Zuckerberg 😉 – has over 250 million users, with the GIF-like Boomerang format making up 25 percent of Instagram Stories. Crikey.

That’s not it though. Instagram have also added interactive polls to their Stories, where people can post an image or video, ask a question and let their users offer their opinion on your everyday dilemmas. Risky. Moreover, they have implemented the ability to grab the colour from a picture you post and use it for your text. Two very jazzy new features that are sure to have users going crazy. Instagram is making strides towards world domination at this rate, and it’s no surprise considering the endless possibilities the app provides. Not part of the Insta army yet? Well the figures suggest you will be soon. Bravo Instagram, Bravo.

In a world where everyone has a phone, tablet, laptop and every other form of technology in existence nestled in their pockets or clutched firmly in their hands, it is impossible to avoid social media and the internet.

As a business owner or service provider, regardless of how hard you try to please everyone with your amazing business acumen and dashing smile, you will inevitably come under scrutiny online. Whilst you may want to delete any negative feedback that comes your way, because who are they to criticise you? You’re great, right? – simply ignoring and removing negative comments is the worst possible idea. Everyone is online and EVERYONE will see that you tried to sweep the complainant under the rug, especially when they come back even angrier than before.

However, there is a way you can turn negative feedback into your best friend, and we are here to help you resolve and conquer the so-called haters with three simple steps (yes, just three!).

First of all, an aggrieved customer will feel they have been personally wronged and so their review or social media comment may appear to be a personal attack on you, causing you to want to immediately argue your defence, and failing at verbal resolution, jump into the ring and go 12 rounds with them… Bad idea!

Now, whilst time is of the essence in regards to responses to online criticism (research has discovered it is crucial to ensure an initial response is provided within the first 30 minutes) – you firstly must absorb the information, assess the problem being brought up and devise a response. So, sit back, have a cuppa and think about what you’re going to say before you respond… but make it quick! A prompt response will make the aggrieved party feel appreciated and heard, and that’s all any of us want to feel.

Following a quick initial response acknowledging and apologising to the customer, try to take the issue offline. This doesn’t mean to turn your computer off and cry yourself to sleep, no not at all. Most social media platforms and review websites offer the option for private messaging, therefore contact the customer out of the public eye to resolve the issue. This will give you the opportunity to discuss the issue at length and come to an effective resolution without the prying eyes of everybody else. Once the issue is resolved, respond again to the public comment to ensure future customers can see you’re the world’s greatest employee and have saved the day!

Finally, it is important to remain professional and polite in your response and to remember the old saying “the customer is always right” – we know you may not think so, but at least pretend yeah? Make sure you respond as yourself and not the company, nobody wants to talk to one of the automated robots you usually find yourself swearing at down the phone whilst the automated voice calmly and infuriatingly tells you to press hash to hear the options again. Also, when possible always offer to compensate the customer if you feel it is warranted, as this will often lead to the complainant giving you and your service another chance to prove that you’re the best out there.

Then, once you have done these three simple steps you will have taken the first steps towards becoming a Jedi master, ready to combat all the negativity on the internet! Or at least the bit which affects you.

Facebook’s VR world, Twitter’s anti-bullying measures and Snapchat’s location-sharing map – it’s been a BIG week for technology, and we’re here to spill all the details.

You ready?

The Creme de la Creme of Live Stream

Video has just got THAT much cooler, thanks to Facebook’s hottest new add-on – a live-streaming feature on its virtual reality app ‘Spaces’. Starting TODAY, users can position a virtual camera and stream a two-dimensional, 360° feed of themselves to people in the outside world. Groovy.

Viewers can send in reactions and comments just like a normal Facebook Live video, but, overall, the platform offers brand new options – drag and drop comments and a virtual reality hangout with friends from any geographic location. Product manager for Facebook’s social VR team, Mike Booth, says “we really want to just put this technology out there and see what people do with it.”

In a push to make virtual reality bigger, better and more accessible, Facebook’s new feature offers those who want a slice of the VR cake without shelling out for all the equipment. Plus, did we mention that the software allows you to tour exotic locations across the globe in 360°? Sounds like the ideal staycation.

Wave Bye to the Haters

Twitter has taken further precautions to cyber bullying with a new, nifty feature – a mute button.

Now you have even more control over your notifications. Mute accounts that don't follow you, new accounts, and more. https://t.co/UapP6DtTtY pic.twitter.com/RcBQGx219k

— Twitter Safety (@TwitterSafety) July 10, 2017

Time to avoid those nasty trolls for GOOD. From newly registered accounts, people you don’t follow to people who don’t follow you, Twitter users now have the option to disable notifications from accounts that they want to avoid.

Users can also get specific with their filters, muting notifications related to certain words and phrases. Though this doesn’t mark a complete end to cyberbullying, it’s definitely a step in the right direction.

Snapchat’s All-seeing Eye

Snapchat’s new Snap Map is causing a stir. The opt-in feature is quite literally a map showing you where your friends are in the world, at all times. Creepy but also cool.

The map uses ‘Actionmoji’ (Bitmoji’s smarter cousin) to designate where you are. “To infer the best Actionmoji, Snapchat may look at things like your location, time of day, or speed of travel,” Snapchat explained in a recent press release. “Examples of Actionmojis today include things like: at the beach, at the airport, sitting and a handful more.”

Allowing users to share their real-time location, which can then be viewed by friends on an interactive map, Snap Map knows a thing or two about precision – its algorithms show not only which street you’re on, but whereabouts you are on that street too.

If social media wasn’t already a tool to stay connected with friends and family at all times, it definitely is now.

The post 360° of Virtual Reality first appeared on 24 fingers.

The post 360° of Virtual Reality appeared first on 24 fingers.

Constantly stressed trying to keep up with all your social networks? Overwhelmed by what to post and feeling like a fish out of water?

Don’t fret – it’s time to turn chaos into cohesion with the 24 fingers guide to mastering the art of social media management…..

Like a champ.

Quality Over Quantity

Social media has seen all sorts of enormous changes since its inception. What started out as a way for us to connect and communicate is now a powerful tool that every business, small and large, should be taking advantage of to cultivate an audience.

And while social media has grown into an incredible opportunity for business owners, it has also grown ten times more complicated, now with more platform options than EVER to choose from. So, should you have Facebook and Twitter? Does your brand need an Instagram profile? A LinkedIn page? Snapchat? YouTube?

The answer: select a medium that offers the best potential for reaching your ideal audience and broadcast the type of media best suited for your business, but, most importantly, select a medium that YOU feel comfortable with. If Facebook is what you know and navigate best, start off there. The beauty of social media is you can pivot at any time and experiment to find out what works best.

Be Trendy

Less in the flared jeans kind of way, more in the industry news and updates kind of way. Keeping up with trending hashtags will not only make sure you’re on top of your social media game, but will also keep your business relevant in this ever-changing digital world.

The best part? Both Twitter and Facebook actually keep track of what people are talking about, saving you from the hard work. Trends are shown on your Twitter and Facebook homepage, and are a great way to suss out whether you want to be part of any conversations. Additionally, knowing what people are talking about on social media can help you hone your message – a savvy marketer keeps their finger on the pulse of potential customers, and trends are a GREAT way to monitor that pulse.

That being said, just because something is trending doesn’t mean you need to jump on the bandwagon. For example, yesterday was #OnionRingDay… relevant to some, but not to all. Ultimately, it’s about understanding what’s happening in real-time and how you can successfully incorporate and seamlessly craft these trends into your brand message.

If you like it then you better put a ring on it. Onion ring, that is. Celebrate official #OnionRingDay at Johnny Rockets! pic.twitter.com/rEVajzX6B1

— Johnny Rockets (@JohnnyRockets) June 22, 2017

(Those onion rings do look good though).

Get Your Calendar On

So you’ve got the gist of your social media strategy, but how do you develop and implement it? Two words: content calendar.

Easily made on an Excel spreadsheet, a content calendar helps you to organise all the amazing content you are curating, and ensures you’re consistently sharing high-quality, engaging content with your audience. They allow you to visualise your social media strategy months ahead. They are indispensable for maintaining a high volume of social media content without losing your marbles. They are the bee’s knees.

If you’re not taking the time to plan your social media calendar in advance, DO IT. You could find yourself scrambling to find something to share otherwise. Also, a content calendar can also be useful to give your wider team an easy-to-digest overview of your social channels, making organising resources THAT much easier. It’s a win-win!

Size Matters

Image sizes, that is. This might sound like an obvious one, but hear us out.

Social media profiles are often your first opportunity to make a dazzling impression on new prospects or customers. And the pictures on these profiles are the first thing people notice. They are a visual representation of your brand online, after all.

With this in mind, you should always strive to have images fall within the optimal dimensions of each social network, to ensure nothing gets cut out and ends up looking unprofessional.

Courtesy of Constant Contact, these specs right here are all you need:

#HASHTAG

Never underestimate the power of the #.

They can be used to manage your social media in a variety of ways, the first being brand value. Are people using a specific # to post content about your company? Follow and monitor any of these hashtags on the social media channels you manage. It’s a great way to keep track of any UGC (User Generated Content) you could repurpose on your own channels.

Another benefit is monitoring campaign performance. Adding a specific hashtag to whichever social media campaign you decide to run will help you track its reach.

Lastly, hashtags are a great (and free!) tool to find and connect with influencers who can help strengthen your image and reach. Simply search any # and find the top influencers for that specific hashtag, contact them via direct message, et voilà. An endorsement from even just one social media influencer can work wonders for your brand.

Sound good, or like a whole lotta work? If the latter, we’ve got an extra pair of hands with your name on them.

How can we help?

Instagram and Snapchat are facing off against each other in a battle for total social media domination. Quite literally.

With Instagram recently dropping ‘Face Filters’ and several other spanking new features (including a Rewind button, Hashtag stickers, and even an Eraser button) can Snapchat continue to put on a brave…. face?

#Filter is the New #NoFilter

Snapchat is feeling the heat. Ever since CEO Evan Spiegel turned down a $3 billion all-cash offer (fact) from Facebook, arch-nemesis Mark Zuckerberg has been on a mission to COMPLETELY dismantle the image messaging app, one replicated feature at a time.

And, with the arrival of Instagram Face Filters, it would seem that the destruction is near-complete. From furry koala ears to a majestic ice crown, the app’s new Camera Effects augmented reality adds to its grand scheme: to reign as social media’s all-encompassing platform.

That’s not it. Instagram also added Location and Hashtag Stories to its Explore tab, making it easier to catch-up on what’s happening around you and find Stories related to your interests (chocolate cake, anyone?).

You will also be able to search for any location and see a story ring for that place at the top of the location page.

“From discovering new parts of your own city to jogging alongside the #fromwhereirun community all around the world, location and hashtag stories help you share these experiences as they unfold,” said Instagram. Do we predict a total eclipse of Snapchat in the near future?….

Right Here, Right Now

Meanwhile, Snapchat is desperately trying to stay afloat. The app released ‘On-Demand’ geofilters that let you easily customise filters for your business and special events.

Whether it’s your best friend’s wedding, a fancy-pants dinner soirée or your dog’s birthday, On-Demand geofilters let anyone build a custom filter for an event. New templates let users create their own customised geofilters without any special knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator or any (pretentious) graphics software at all.

Sounds dandy, but what’s the catch, you ask? Snapchat’s new On-Demand geofilter themes are currently available on their website…. with a price tag. Depending on the size of the geofence and the duration of the event, costs can vary anywhere from $5 to a whopping $100,000.

Maybe refrain from getting too geofilter-happy.

What’s for Dinner?

Whilst Instagram and Snapchat are involved in awkward conflict, popular image-collecting site Pinterest is busy making tech history.

Out at a restaurant? Love at first bite? Pinterest will give you a way to snap a shot of that sinfully delicious dish you ordered through its ‘Lens’ feature, and lead you to recipes related to it (like the Shazam for food). You can then save those recipes and start experimenting at home! What’s more, the site is also introducing MORE filters to its recipe searches. Users can now fine-tune their culinary experience, from the amount of time it takes to prepare a dish to those that contain specific ingredients.

Got some cheddar, chorizo and half a courgette in the fridge? You might just be able to filter through Pinterest’s search engine for the perfect recipe to whip up. Bon Appétit!

The post The Billion Dollar Filter War first appeared on 24 fingers.

The post The Billion Dollar Filter War appeared first on 24 fingers.

LinkedIn advertising, Facebook Reactions, Snapchat’s Ad Manager – it’s been a big week for social media. Luckily we’ve got the low-down on all the latest, greatest updates to get you social media-savvy….

Time to get your geek on.

Reach Your People

LinkedIn means business. The networking service is officially rolling out Matched Audiences, a feature that helps all LinkedIn advertisers target their ads based on people’s web browsing activity, email addresses and employers. It’s in-depth market research at its finest.

LinkedIn’s targeted ads will appear where people are looking to do strictly business, and since LinkedIn will consider both primary and secondary email addresses (you know what they say – never mix work with pleasure….) attached to people’s profiles, business-to-business marketers will have a higher chance of hitting their target audience.

On top of that, advertisers have the chance to get super-specific with their targeting, connecting them to the right audiences through gender, age, location, job title and even seniority level. “Most marketers would agree that customer targeting and remarketing is a game of ‘Data Science’. Not Big Data, but Real-Big-Accurate Data will solve the problem for marketers in targeting the right audiences who are interested in taking the journey forward”, LinkedIn said in a statement.

An exciting audience targeting tool for marketers, we can only expect LinkedIn to drop more features in the near future.

Express Yourself

If we could react to Facebook’s newest update, it would be this:

For Facebook users can now react to COMMENTS with emoji. The newest feature lets people respond to discussions under posts and status updates with a ‘Love’, ‘Haha’, ‘Wow’, ‘Sad’ and ‘Angry’. Online communication has just got so much better.

Handy for relaying the right message with only a tap of a button, Facebook have stated “we’ve heard from people that they’d like more ways to show their reaction in conversations on Facebook, so we’re rolling out the ability to react to comments”. Ask, and you shall receive!

Snapchat is at Your Service

Small, medium, large – brands of ALL sizes can rejoice, as Snapchat is set to launch a self-service advertising platform inclusive for everyone.

Available in the UK and other European markets from June, the tool is is available at absolutely NO cost and marketers can buy, manage, optimise and view data across all their campaigns. Not only that, but the Ad Manager works together with the Snapchat Mobile Dashboard, letting advertisers view their ‘Snap Ads’ through the eyes of the user they’re targeting. It’s (techy) magic.

So, how does one review the campaign metrics? Don’t fret. Brands will be able to track all the stats live and receive key campaign notifications straight to their mobiles.

As seen above, the tool is accessible right from the Snapchat app, no frills or fuss! Big brands, it’s time to move over.

The post LinkedIn Means Business first appeared on 24 fingers.

The post LinkedIn Means Business appeared first on 24 fingers.
