Without sounding horribly dramatic, the future is video. And then more video. With the ever-increasing popularity of apps such as Snapchat, short, snappy video content is where it’s at, offering brands the type of flexibility and creative opportunities that are just too good to miss. Here’s how to flex your directing muscle and make your video hit the spot.

Including the right keywords in your video’s title is key. The description and tags should also be brimming with relevant keywords to attract the right people, and increase SEO benefits. (Unsure about SEO techniques? Head this way).

A call to action, or CTA, is a way to push people to where you want them. A product page? Your website? Simply another video? Don’t overlook a strong CTA – it’s your chance to walk your customer to where you want them.

The right thumbnail for your video will ensure you get those all-important clicks, and if it’s a great snap that represents a great video it’ll keep people watching longer – so don’t use a misleading thumbnail – or else.

YouTube allows you 120 characters for tagging your video. Use each and every one. The more keywords the better.

Keep it short and sweet. In an age of live streaming and Snapchat, people won’t watch something forever. Long rambling videos won’t get any engagement, so don’t cram too much into one video. Lots of snappy videos will do better than your reworking of The Hobbit.

As new statistics released show that 80 per cent of Facebook videos are viewed without sound, it’s important your videos reflect this. They cannot be sound dependent or people will just keep scrolling. Think Charlie Chaplin and the era of silent movies.

When creating the video, ensure it’s ready to share across all platforms. It’ll have to be shortened for Instagram and Vine – and cropped to square. Make sure you’re aware of these things when filming. Oh, and don’t forget to always upload it straight onto the platform instead of using a YouTube link. It’ll look and play better, promise.

Got an event coming up? A new product to launch? Video is the perfect medium for announcements and, when it’s done in a shareable way, it’ll go far.

Confused by content and CTAs? See if 24 fingers can help you release your inner Spielberg.

The post Lights + camera + action = engagement first appeared on 24 fingers.

The post Lights + camera + action = engagement appeared first on 24 fingers.

The future of the UK and the EU is at stake after Thursday’s big vote.
Tweeting on the throne

What is the prime location to tweet? outside, in the office or, of course, in one’s ‘divine golden tweeting room’?

Erm, what now? Ask her madge who sat down at her desk this week to thank everyone for her birthday messages via Twitter.

This tweet from Dominos was a difficult one to call. It’s a win because… well, they made Stone Henge out of pizza, which is pretty epic. In fact, making the summer solstice work for their account at all is epic and inventive. However, from a business angle, it’s a video that would have taken time and effort and it doesn’t have any call to action or suggestion to buy a pizza. Hmm.

They are now looking after it while they try and trace Tigger’s owners on Twitter – with the hashtag #OperationTigerKitten.
Plugging the pug

Some pugs are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them. For Doug the Pug, he’s hoping that the great and the good on the Ellen DeGeneres show will grant him an appearance. How? By dressing up as Finding Nemo and spreading the word on social media of course. Judge for yourself if this is an Ellen-worthy pug.

#FAILS

Facepalm

Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, had his Twitter and Pinterest accounts hacked this Monday. A hacker going by the name OurMine claims they found his details in a database of 117 million passwords hacked from LinkedIn in 2012. It’s astonishing to think that the founder of Facebook did something that even your dad knows NOT to do: use the same password across different accounts.

Portrait pals

Eeek. As much as we love finding inventive ways to get involved with trending days, this just doesn’t quite sit right. The women in the portrait definitely don’t look like they’re perfect pals.

#WIN BUT ALSO #FAIL

Wrong direction

The internet went mad on Tuesday when a story emerged online that three Brits on their way back from a night out in Ayia Napa took a wrong boat and ended up in Syria. They documented the trip on Snapchat, which was then picked up by some pretty huge publications, like The Metro and the Telegraph.

A few days later it emerged the story was just one huge prank. Hmm. Win on the guys' part - they fooled the entire world. Fail on the publication's part - bit embarrassing to have printed without fact checking. Awks.

Media Production student Natasha Websdale has joined us as part of her course at Bournemouth University. Not quite the McJob she’d dreamed of, but we’ll give her a gold star anyway.

#1. What’s your favourite word?

Petrichor – i just love the way it sounds. It means the smell of dust after rain.

#2. What gets you up in the morning?

Breakfast.

#3. What do you truly, honestly think of social media?

Umm, honestly I find it really confusing. There’s so much of it about. I mostly just use Facebook, and a little bit of Twitter.

#4. You’ll be a social media wunderkid before you know it. Trust us. Kindles or books?

Kindles. They weigh so much less! I read a book almost every other day so a Kindle is the best way to carry them all around.

#5. What do you think is the biggest challenge to your industry right now?

Competing with the amount of media content out there.

#6. What did you want to be when you were growing up?

I wanted to work in McDonalds until I was ten… it was my lifelong goal. I have no idea why. Probably because I thought I’d get free food.

#7. What led you to your current career?

I studied Photography, Graphic Design, Media Studies and English at A Level so I’m quite a creative person. I decided to do Media Production so I could do lots of different things, and specialise later on.

#8. Can you use your favourite word in a sentence?

It smells like petrichor outside!

#9. Can you make it rhyme?

Open the door and you’ll smell petrichor.

#10. What advice would you give to your younger self?

Probably just chill out a bit. I was always quite stressed at school and I should have relaxed a bit more.

#11. What’s the best thing anyone’s ever done for you?

My parents have always made sure I’ve had everything I’ve ever wanted, and I really appreciate that.

#12. Tell us, what’s been your ‘career-defining moment’?

In my second year of university as part of my course I had to create a campaign for the National Trust. It was a social media campaign with films, posters and blogs. Our theme was #NaturalNeverAges – it was a narrative of children’s lives from the start to old age, visiting National Trust properties and how that experience changed for them.

#13. If you won a big award of some kind, whom would you thank?

I guess my parents. I bet everyone says that…

#14. Can you give us a timesaver of the day?

Get out of bed early. Do it.

#15. Where do you see your industry in 24 months?

Probably quite similar to where we are now, just lots video content.

#16. Where were you 24 months ago?

Spain, I think! On holiday.

#17. What’s an interesting fact about your university?

Bournemouth is one of the leading universities for media in the UK.

#18. If you could have a Skype chat with anyone living or dead, who would it be?

Quentin Tarantino. He’s crazy, I’d love to see how his brain works.

#19. What’s one word you’d want people to describe you with?

Determined.

#20. Mind taking a selfie

Yep that’s fine.

#21. Thank you. What’s your favourite Twitter handle?

I like the BBC accounts so I know what’s going on around the world.

#22. What’s one quote that defines your work ethic?

Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.

#23. Apart from seeing us, what’s been the best part of your day?

I successfully navigated the underground without getting lost – success.

#24. And finally, anything to plug?

Here’s a portfolio of my work > https://www.behance.net/natashawebsdale

The post Gold stars all round first appeared on 24 fingers.

The post Gold stars all round appeared first on 24 fingers.

The only question is: is the trending hashtag right for the brand or will it look like a shameless shoehorn like Homebase’s RIP Prince #fail? Here’s a round-up of who totes got it right this year.

Emoji lovers rejoice, Facebook Messenger is adding a whole new set of diverse icons to its app.

Love them or hate them, you can’t avoid emojis. They are popular mostly with millennials, but still used by some adults (Dad, please stop using the aubergine emoji. It doesn’t just mean the vegetable). They are quick and easy, sending one is way faster than typing out a response. The true power of emojis is seen offline as well; just head to Primark’s kids section and see what I mean.

When Facebook Messenger reported that nearly 10 per cent of all messages sent on the app included emojis, few can say they were surprised (personally, I use an emoji in most messages I send). But for Facebook, the stat was surprising. So much so that it decided to embrace and evolve the trend, to: “Begin making emojis more representative of the world we live in”.

That means more skin tones, cultures, more icons of professional women, and new hair colours. Gingers, it’s your time…

In fact, there’ll be more than 1,500 designs which the internet seems super excited about. And no matter what emoji you pick, it’ll look the same for all Messenger users. Andriod, iOS, (what other phones even exist?!) Whatever you have and whatever your pals have, it’ll look the same. Goodbye weird black boxes.

So why are we telling you this? Well, it is important for any business to reach the consumer in a way that makes them stand out from the crowd. Understanding why emojis are popular and how to use them correctly is an art form. Get it right and your audience will think you are the best thing since sliced bread. Get it wrong and well, it’s a bit like your dad using the aubergine emoji. Enough said.

Let 24 fingers harness the power of emojis to help your business say more with less.

The post The emoji revolution first appeared on 24 fingers.

The post The emoji revolution appeared first on 24 fingers.

What could be better than a cat video on the internet? A cat video on the internet helping to fight skin cancer, that’s what. This incredible ad campaign proves that curiosity won’t kill the cat, it’ll save the dog. A super cute kitten inspecting every inch of a Dalmatian to highlight the need to check for ‘beauty’ spots that could be the first signs of skin cancer. Genius. Plus it caused a lot (A LOT) of high-pitched squeaking in the office.

Deliveroo delivered

Every now and then, we see a campaign and think ‘Damn, we wish that was our idea’. We had that yesterday. #JamiesDeliveroo was announced on Facebook at 8.30am and was trending on Twitter just half an hour later. To get involved, you simply had to tweet your workplace and city to be in with a chance of winning a ‘Super Food Lunch’ from Jamie Oliver delivered by Deliveroo.

Get tweeting #JamiesDeliveroo with your workplace and city to win a Super Food Lunch from ME and @Deliveroo today! https://t.co/w4elIGSs2E — Jamie Oliver (@jamieoliver) June 2, 2016

Once both companies had started pushing it, people got involved and lunches got delivered. All Jamie’s social media team had to do was sit back and retweet the snaps of entire offices enjoying his salad.

Always check the IQ of your influencers

When it comes to influencers, getting it right is tricky. (Read more about that here.) We thought the tricky bit was finding the right one, but turns out their intelligence (or lack of) is what you should watch out for. Scott Disick, Kourtney Kardashian’s baby-daddy, posted this Instagram #ad with a little too much information in the caption.
