<p><b>What Is Forum and How Does It Work?</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Meta has launched a new app called Forum, positioned as a standalone space for Facebook Groups. It did not get a formal launch &#8211; it was spotted on the iOS App Store by analyst Matt Navarra and has not been announced in all markets yet.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Forum describes itself as a dedicated space for deeper discussions, real answers, and the communities people care about. Log in with your Facebook account and you get a feed from Groups you have already joined. You can search for and join new groups based on your interests.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Posts and comments can be published under a nickname &#8211; which makes it feel less like Facebook and more like somewhere a person would ask a genuine question. Everything shared on Forum remains visible to Group members via Facebook.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There is also an AI-powered Ask tab. Drop a question in, and it pulls curated responses based on comments from real people across Facebook Groups, then lets you join those groups directly. Group Admins get a separate AI assistant to help manage groups and moderate content.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Forum is currently iPhone-only and not available in all regions.</span></p>
<p><b>Why Is Meta Really Doing This?</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Reddit&#8217;s share price has been doing things Meta&#8217;s shareholders notice. That is most of the explanation.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Facebook Groups generate high-intent, high-engagement conversations that currently live inside Facebook&#8217;s main app, competing with everything else in the feed. A dedicated app pulls that behaviour into a separate container, makes it stickier, and gives Meta a new surface to eventually monetise.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Meta has emphasised that Forum is about answers from real people &#8211; positioning it as the antidote to AI-generated responses. The irony is that an AI assistant fetches those answers when you use the Ask tab.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Reddit built a billion-dollar business on exactly this behaviour. Meta has two billion users and owns the Groups infrastructure. The maths is not complicated.</span></p>
<p><b>What Does Forum Mean for Your Business?</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you run a Facebook Group as part of your marketing &#8211; a customer community, a niche interest group, a members-only space &#8211; Forum puts that content in front of people who are actively looking for it. Inside Facebook&#8217;s main feed, your Group&#8217;s discussions compete with everything. Inside Forum, they compete only with other discussions on the same topic.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The nickname feature changes what people ask. People ask different questions when they do not feel observed. Communities that feel psychologically safe generate more honest, more useful conversations &#8211; which makes the Group more valuable to everyone in it, including the admin running it. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It gives <a href="https://24fingers.co.uk/do-instagram-engagement-pods-work/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Instagram users</a> the chance to create and post their reaction to a Reel, and while it might have a lot of comedic value, it&#8217;s also got great potential for business. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Picture the scene: a small or medium-sized company posts its reaction to content from a bigger company, which then goes viral, bringing customers to their door and putting their brand on everyone&#8217;s lips. Talk about lights, camera, action&#8230; </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You can Remix any Reel, as long as the original poster has enabled access. The great thing is, the feature can be turned on and off, either by using the Privacy Settings, which would affect all Reels, or after you share each individual video.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To Remix a Reel, choose the video you want to react to and tap the three dots. “Remix This Reel&#8221; should appear if the original <a href="https://24fingers.co.uk/24-tips-to-grow-your-instagram-followers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Instagram</a> poster has enabled the feature. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Record or upload your new Reel, which should appear on the right side of the screen. Now&#8217;s the time to merrily edit and get creative, adding stickers, a voiceover or change the soundtrack. When you&#8217;re happy with your content, write a caption and choose your video settings, then share &#8211; easy peasy. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">We&#8217;re quite the amazing species, when you think about it. Yet astonishingly, it&#8217;s taken until <em>now</em> for Instagram to allow us to use keywords to search for stuff. </span><span id="more-4810"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Previously, we had to blunder around using <a href="https://24fingers.co.uk/hashtag-strategy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">hashtags</a> as a search method which, as anyone who has ever tried to find anything on <a href="https://24fingers.co.uk/how-to-manage-your-instagram-account-from-your-desktop/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Instagram</a> can be like trying to do brain surgery while wearing boxing gloves, because the platform would only look for answers among a user&#8217;s name or bio. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It was inefficient and frustrating. But hurrah! English-speaking people in the UK and Ireland can now use keywords to dig up content, even if it isn&#8217;t tagged with the keyword you&#8217;re using.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It&#8217;s a smart move by <a href="https://24fingers.co.uk/facebook-shops-social-media/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Facebook</a>, which owns Instagram, but if early tests are anything to go by, don&#8217;t start hanging out the flags just yet… </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It&#8217;s not immediately obvious how the Instagram keyword search identifies what a post is about, and some searches have yielded mixed results. A spokesperson said the tool assesses &#8220;a number of factors,” such as the “type of content, captions, when it was posted,” and uses machine learning to “find the highest quality content that’s relevant to you. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Instagram keyword search is &#8220;limited to general interest topics and keywords that are within Instagram’s community guidelines,&#8221; they added. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">So, you <em>can</em> use keywords to search <a href="https://24fingers.co.uk/instagram-reels-to-reel-or-not-to-reel/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Instagram</a> posts, but for the moment it&#8217;s a very limited &#8211; and somewhat frustrating &#8211; exercise. We can tell you puppies, pasta and flowers work, but you&#8217;ll get nowhere with slightly more controversial keywords, such as vaccine or Trump. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">24 fingers crossed, it won&#8217;t be long before the boffins at Instagram work their magic and broaden it out a bit. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It&#8217;s a great place for businesses and professionals to connect or spotlight their CVs and or show off their services, but it&#8217;s always lacked a bit of personality. The global roll-out of <a href="https://24fingers.co.uk/how-to-use-linkedin-polls-to-drive-engagement/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">LinkedIn</a> Stories could well put an end to that stuffed-shirt image. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">LinkedIn calls Stories content &#8220;lightweight conversations related to your work-life&#8221;, but we like to think of it as the businessman undoing his tie or a female entrepreneur kicking off those killer heels. Brands have been quick to try it out, too. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Christian Dior Culture used Stories posts to offer a behind-the-scenes look at September&#8217;s Paris Fashion Week, while others have used it to reveal competition winners or host Q&amp;As. Job seekers and experts can also use the feature to post temporary content. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As with <a href="https://24fingers.co.uk/tiktok-algorithm-for-you-feed/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">TikTok</a>, the trick with LinkedIn Stories is to be true to yourself and your brand to increase your <a href="https://24fingers.co.uk/24-ways-boost-social-media-engagement/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">engagement</a>. &#8220;We believe Stories can become an integral part of brands’ communication strategies,&#8221; said Tom Pepper, head of marketing solutions UK, Ireland and Israel at LinkedIn.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;My advice to any brands looking to experiment with Stories is just do it. The great thing about Stories is that they don&#8217;t have to be slick or overproduced, as long as they are authentic and match your brand and audience.&#8221;</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This strange time has also forced many businesses to really embrace <a href="https://24fingers.co.uk/the-10-best-collaboration-tools/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">digital technology</a>, including video conferencing. Moments of peering into the screen and muttering &#8220;is it on yet?&#8221; swiftly gave way to us hosting or attending meetings involving several colleagues and using Zoom or Skype like the bosses we are.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">So if everyone&#8217;s doing it, how do you make yourself stand out from the video conferencing crowd? </span></p>

<p><strong>Know your technology</strong></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As with all new bits of kit, it&#8217;s always wise to give them the once-over before diving in and  video conferencing software is no different. Get to know your way around the platform before joining or hosting any meetings, and make sure all pop-up or notification bleeps, bloops and blarts are firmly turned off. </span></p>

<p><strong>Location, location, location</strong></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Not all of us have a dedicated office space to conduct meetings (and anyone who saw that adorable BBC interview with Professor Robert Kelly knows the value of a locked door), so choosing a calm, quiet location for your meeting is crucial. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Position yourself against an interesting background with good lighting. Bookcases are a popular choice but if you don&#8217;t want your clients/colleagues to know you&#8217;re a Danielle Steele nut, then a plain wall will do. Make sure that pile of laundry is shoved well out of shot before you go live. </span></p>
<p><strong>Wear it well</strong></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">By now, working from home should &#8211; 24 fingers crossed &#8211; should be close to normal, so slobbing about in pyjamas won&#8217;t even be on your radar. But if you&#8217;re video conferencing a potential new client or the meeting is more formal than a colleagues&#8217; get-together, make sure you reflect that with a smart outfit. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As long as you&#8217;re 100% certain you won&#8217;t be required to stand up or move around, chances are you can get away with wearing whatever you like below the camera. </span></p>

<p><strong>Chit chat&#8230;</strong></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Although you&#8217;re probably miles from each other, don&#8217;t forget the pleasantries when people join the conversation. Getting the ball rolling with a little bit of small talk &#8211; especially when socialising face to face is a bit of a luxury at the moment &#8211; goes a long way when building <a href="https://24fingers.co.uk/email-sign-up/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">relationships</a>. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">That said, it&#8217;s easy for us to be on transmit rather than receive, so it&#8217;s important to stay focused on the point of the meeting and not waffle on. If you&#8217;re hosting the meeting, then have a series of bullet points to hand so you don&#8217;t wander off-topic. Mute yourself before you wreck yaself.</span></p>

He&#8217;s got one eye on helping the world use social media for good, and one eye on the best way to reach Mars. 3, 2, 1, lift off&#8230;<br />

<p><b>#1. So, what’s your favourite word?</b></p>
<p>It&#8217;s not my favourite but one I use a lot. I&#8217;m a huge nerd and I love science fiction, so my word is &#8216;technobabble&#8217;. This is going to make me sound 80 times more interesting, right?</p>
<p><b>#2. Affirmative. What gets you up in the morning? </b></p>
<p>My alarm and my children. I have seven-year old twins.</p>
<p><b>#3. Twice as nice. What do you truly, honestly think of social media?</b></p>
<p>It’s a set of tools and used correctly, it can change the world for the better. For the malicious people in the world, it has the opposite use. I think it’s like anything, traditional advertising, PR etc, we have to look at how it&#8217;s used and its potential for good. Does it have the power to connect, is it genuine, how easily can it be hijacked.</p>
<p><b>#4. Kindles or books?</b></p>
<p>Books.  My wife is the fastest reader and I&#8217;m officially the slowest. She prefers reading on her iPad, she consumes books that quickly.</p>
<p><b>#5. Go girl. What do you think is the biggest challenge to your industry right now?</b></p>
<p>One of the largest challenges, in the social and environmental space is apathy. Sometimes people feel the size of the problem is too big, that one person can’t make a difference. That&#8217;s a big barrier to entry. Also negative press. That&#8217;s a very valid challenge, but you know, anomalies are not representational entirely.</p>
<p><b>#6. What did you want to be when you were growing up?</b></p>
<p>First off, a Disney animator. Then a film director.</p>
<p><b>#7. Errol, run VT! What led you to your current career?</b></p>
<p>Total accident, I got a job as a fundraiser at the New York Public Library.  It turns out I was good at asking people for money.</p>
<p><b>#8. Well, if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. Can you use your favourite word in a sentence?</b></p>
<p>That’s just a bunch of technobabble.</p>
<p><b>#9. Now can you make it rhyme?</b></p>
<p>What rhymes with babble? I can&#8217;t think. OK, this now makes me sound uninteresting and uncreative.</p>
<p><b>#10. Never! What advice would you give to your younger self?</b></p>
<p>Things are going to be ok. Don’t over-stress. It’s all fine, always. Don’t sweat the small stuff.</p>
<p><b>#11. Abso-bloody-lutely. What’s the best thing anyone’s ever done for you?</b></p>
<p>I’ve been very lucky.  There have been people there at particular junctures of my life, whether they knew it or not. <span class="st">Heather Lubov at the NY Public Library is one example. S</span>he believed in me when I had very little experience and really helped set me on this career path.</p>
<p><b>#12. High five Heather. Tell us, what’s been your ‘career-defining’ moment?</b></p>
<p>There’s been a few &#8211; three for sure. One was starting IG, that took a big leap of faith to make it into a reality. That first time I saw our holding page, that was a special moment. Then launching Social Misfits, especially my wife supporting me to start a second company, and Lightful when we achieved our first round of funding for £4m.</p>
<p><b>#13. Bosh. If you won a big award of some kind, who would you thank?</b></p>
<p>Alisha, my wife and my mom.</p>
<p><b>#14. Behind every great man are two great women. Can you give us a timesaver of the day?</b></p>
<p>No &#8211; can you give me one?? I&#8217;m not the best with time. Actually, what I need is a time machine like Hermione&#8217;s time-turner.  I wish I had one of those.</p>
<p><b>#15. Where do you see your industry in 24 months?</b></p>
<p>In the social for good space, I can see it moving towards more collaboration. Technology and digital solutions aren&#8217;t the absolute solution, but they are tools. People and companies are starting to realise they have to incorporate technology in elements.  For social to do really well, so it can help more people, will mean that tech can and does play a part.</p>
<p><b>#16. Where were you 24 months ago?</b></p>
<p>My mom was in town, she’s in town now. Actually, I was doing exactly what I do now. Meetings. Thankfully I don’t do meetings for meeting&#8217;s sake. The nature of my day to day is meetings. I have between 25-30 meetings a week, talking to clients, the team and business development.</p>
<p><b>#17. That&#8217;s a whole lotta meetings. What’s an interesting fact about your company?</b></p>
<p>Ok, so here we go. Both the companies&#8217; branding identities are based on Quentin Tarantino films. For IG, we have the yellow and black, inspired by the Bride from Kill Bill&#8217;s yellow tracksuit, which in turn was inspired by Bruce Lee&#8217;s Game of Death (Ed&#8217;s note: you read it here first). For Social Misfits Media, we have the splatter of Reservoir Dogs forming part of our logo. And if you were going to ask me what colour I&#8217;d be, I can be Mr Blue if you&#8217;re asking me to choose.</p>
<p><b>#18. Royale with cheese. If you could have a 24-minute Skype chat with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?</b></p>
<p>Leonard Nimoy aka Spock. I&#8217;m lucky to have got to meet several of my heroes and those who have been instrumental and influential during my life.</p>

<p>Energetic.</p>

<p>OK, it&#8217;s got to be <a href="https://twitter.com/swear_trek?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Sweartrek</a>. This is a bunch of nerds that take screengrabs and write super vulgar stuff on them. It’s amazing. I get such enjoyment.</p>
