And 2020…sounds pretty futuristic, right? Well, some of the trends for next year will follow that futuristic feel but with a bit of understanding and forward planning everyone can jump on board and make social media work for their business. Boooooom.

1. Stories will continue to create excitement

The growth of Instagram and Facebook Stories in recent years is incredible and will continue to grow well into the new decade. Everyone loves a bit of behind the scenes action and the more authentic insight that content created on the spot can give, so it’s easy to see why so many social media users are enjoying Stories.

Why not use Stories to your advantage this year? Often the pull of watching stories is the classic FOMO feeling (Fear Of Missing Out), so why not tease your followers with a little ‘blink and you’ll miss it’? They’re a great way to give your loyal followers – who will learn to regularly watch your stories – both an insight into your business’ personality as well as any offers which are only available for a certain time.

We’ll be running another Instagram Stories workshop next year. Don’t get all FOMO on us – register your interest by email.

2. Brand discovery via social media will grow

There has been a definite rise in people using social media to research brands in recent years. Hands up those of us that stalk follow certain brands on social media ready to get the first glance of any new products, or to get a feel for the company and products before buying? This is definitely going to continue, and indeed, grow, in 2020.

In order to sell on social media in 2020, aside from having a clear, consistent look and feel to your feeds, make sure that you’re also using product tags in both Facebook and Instagram, as well as the in-built product galleries. In a world where you don’t have to leave your favourite social app in order to buy a product, if you rely on social media to sell your product, you need to make sure that you’re pulling out all of the stops – and pulling out all you can in terms of social media shops – in 2020. How’s that for futuristic? (Ed’s note: Indeed.)

3. Customer service via social media will improve

When it comes to customer service via social media, you need to ensure that you’re on it. This means replying to comments and messages in a timely manner and using chatbots where applicable. For most people nowadays, the first port of call when they have a complaint is social media. As customer service shifts more and more towards social, a brand who can handle comments well will always fare well in the eyes of its customers.

Read our top tips to online customer service here.

4. Video will be king (and queen)

Video has grown and grown in recent years and will continue to do so into 2020. With 80% of social media content predicted to be video-based next year, it’s time to release your inner Steven Spielberg.

Whether you’re looking to deliver information to your customers via Facebook Live, or are more interested in a YouTube or IGTV video, the variety of options available on social media will mean that there will be a format to suit you and your business needs.

We’ll be hosting a workshop showing you how to create engaging videos for social media soon. *Watch* this space.

5. Social networking will become more meaningful

There’s a definite move away from people using social media to share the minutiae of their everyday lives and seeing it as more of a leisure pursuit, sharing things that connect them with friends over everyday details. Yes, people still share photographs and big moments aka morning cappuccino but you only have to take one look at your Facebook memories (Ed’s note: cringe) to see that the things we used to share on social media years ago, well, we just wouldn’t even entertain posting now.

Make 2020 the year that you discover your brand’s social media personality and use this to create shareable content which actually means something and provides value to your customers and new prospects. They’ll love you for it. Actual fact.

Whatever your social media style is in 2020, the future of social is bright. And if you need some extra fingers to point you in the right direction? Step into the 24fingers’ time machine and hang onto your laptops: we’ll happily take you into the future of social. Book your free discovery call and tell us what’s got you all fingers and thumbs.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Almost. Kind of. Well, it is if you’re planning your Christmas social media campaigns, and let us be the first to say it: if you’re not planning your Christmas social media campaigns yet, you so should be.

Think of it this way, with the exception of those daredevil types who leave their Christmas shopping until 4pm on Christmas Eve (yes, we did mean you Miss Goode), many of us will start thinking about Christmas once the Halloween cobwebs have been dusted away. And with Facebook saying that nearly half of shoppers start their Christmas shopping in November or earlier, if you start to deck your platforms with your Christmas social media campaigns in the next few weeks, you’ll be the early bird that catches the pig in a blanket. Use the following tips and tricks, and we promise you won’t be disappointed come Christmas morning.

On the First Day of Christmas, Facebook gave to me: Customisable Stories Templates!

Stories have risen quicker than a Christmas pudding this year, and it’s therefore easy to see why Facebook have given us an early Christmas present of new templates which allow businesses to provide simple but visually impactful Stories. These can be used across Facebook Stories, Messenger Stories and, the home of the original Story, Instagram Stories.

If you’ve never used Stories before, first of all, you need to come along to our training workshop. Secondly, these templates could be a really great place to start, especially if you’re looking to up your social media game this Christmas. If you want to access these templates, you’ll need to create an image ad in Facebook Ads Manager, then choose ‘Select a placement to customize’, before choosing which platform you’re posting to. From here a pop up will open, which will allow you to choose your template and preview your ad before posting.

You’ll find a whole host of new toys to play with in your Stories stocking from this point, including being able to choose the background colour, music and call to action effects. You will need to use them within paid promotions, but if you’ve never delved into the world of sponsored Facebook posts, is there a better time to try than in the run up to Christmas? Remember that you can also download these stories to re-use them as organic story posts at a later date. Shout us if you need a hand on this.

Christmas Consistency

Following on from the use of the new Facebook templates, whether you opt to use the pre-made templates or not, keeping your brand’s social media message consistent is key. Of course, you can add a little festive twist to your message, but make sure it’s in keeping with your overall brand look and feel. This could be keeping your colours or font choices the same as your usual posts but changing things up with Christmas imagery or using seasonal gifs and music.

Remember that your profile pictures and cover photos are prime social media real estate, so consider updating these with something merry and bright. Why not include some useful information in your cover photos too, such as your operating hours over the Christmas holidays?

Ho, Ho, Hashtags

Hashtags are important at any time of year, but Christmas – and specifically the run up to Christmas – generates more opportunities than ever to use them. First of all, why not come up with your own hashtag to go along with your Christmas campaign? This could be an excellent way of generating User Generated Content (UGC) which you can then use to repost your followers’ posts to your own pages.

Secondly, don’t just focus on the main festive season; think about the run up and use relevant hashtags such as #BlackFriday and #CyberMonday to drive traffic to your platforms.

Give the Gift of your Products

Of course, the main aim of any marketing campaign – Christmas related or otherwise – is to sell. And if you have gift-worthy products at your disposal, now is the time when you should be pushing them as Christmas presents.

Think about what products in your inventory work as Christmas gifts; some things will not lend themselves well as gifts, but maybe you do have products or services which people would want to give and receive. If so, those are the products that you should be highlighting right now.

Spread Good Cheer

Last but definitely not least, when it comes to your Christmas social media campaigns, remember that it’s ‘social’ media for a reason: spread good cheer, add a little festive fun to your posts and remember to engage with your followers.

Use the likes of polls in your stories to gather festive feedback from your followers or ask Christmas related questions and – most importantly – get excited about their responses. The more you engage with your audience in the run up to Christmas, the more they’ll see the human side of your brand, and isn’t the festive season all about goodwill to all men and women kind?

Writing about yourself is a bit cringe, isn’t it? We’ve all been there – tasked with the horribly daunting job of summarising all of what makes you the coolest, greatest, wittiest, most amazing person there was this side of town. In just a few sentences.

Striking the right balance between personality, professionalism, individuality and comedic effect is something of an art form. One, however, that anyone, anywhere, can master….

Short and Sweet

Your social media bio isn’t a rambling chapter of your autobiography. It’s a brief introduction, or snapshot, into you as a person. At the risk of sounding existential — Who are you? What do you do? What do you love?

Concise and to the point is KEY on social media. Your bio should represent the most important info that someone should know about you, straight away. Just as Ellen wants you to know that she’s an ice road trucker (amongst other things).

To help, try approaching your bio as you would a snappy headline; think your very own sensationalized news article. In other words (pun intended), get straight to the story.

Flatter Yourself

This is usually frowned upon, but not in the case of a social media bio, oh no. Now is the time to drop in that award you won, mention your most extraordinary skills, the projects that you’ve been a part – generally butter yourself up.

Set yourself apart from all the other professionals in your field and highlight your proudest accomplishments. There’s absolutely no harm in a little bit of self-promotion. Social media is one of the best platforms to expand your network, after all.

Be Uniquely You

Whether you’re writing your Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn bio, remember: there is only one *insert your first and last name* in this world.

In the age of social media, your bio has become as, if not more, important as your business card. It’s your golden opportunity to convince people to ‘Friend’ you or Follow you, and one of the best ways to do that is to be completely, unapologetically you.

With 400 million plus active users on just Twitter alone, many bios are hopelessly predictable. Yours needs to be a breath of fresh air.

Know Your Target Audience

Did you know you can attract folk to your social media page with hashtags, handles and links? Yes, it’s completely possible.

On Twitter, specifically, you can @ the company work for or own (if you’re writing a bio on your personal profile), your university and other relevant networks. Throw in some searchable, trending hashtags that display your passions – #heforshe #foodie, if you’re a gender equality advocate and burger enthusiast.

Use words that help to specify your niche: blogger, vlogger, designer, politician, artist, author.

Targeting is simple yet very, very effective.

Have a Bit of Fun

There’s a comedian in all of us, waiting to be unleashed. Got a clever punchline you think would stop people in their tracks, wishing they came up with it themselves? Or a pun that’s so bad it’s almost great? Throw it in.Your bio is there to be professional but never be afraid to show off your personality.

Need a helping hand in summing up all those superlatives in one neat bio? Just pop your email in the form below and we’ll have you up and out there in no time.

World-wide facial recognition and swanky search bars are having a moment. From Facebook’s spying eyes to Pinterest’s ‘camera’ tool, the latest in tech is nothing short of exciting.

Better read on find out, hey?

Putting a Face to a Name

Social media giant Facebook is taking yet another gargantuan sprint forward in the tech race – new super powers (AKA algorithms) that would help put names on faces, even if they are completely obscured.

This super savvy feature will include facial recognition, identifying people based on their clothing and even their posture. In a statement issued by the company, the feature has the ability to “recognise the entire population of Earth”. Impressive. Also a bit creepy.

In addition, Facebook is rumoured to be rolling out advanced technology that will use pictures to sell people products based on the info provided. For example, if a user posts a photo of them hiking the Andes mountains, the tech can recognise this and strategically place adverts for waterproof boots on their Facebook page.

It seems there’s no stopping the Zuck…

Pinterest Gets Snappy

Web and mobile app Pinterest have only gone and stepped up their game, once again. With plans to make it easier for users to search and discover favourite pins, the site has now added the ‘Lens’ feature to its landing page – a search and visual discovery tool.

If you spot something out in the world that immediately catches your eye (a swaggy pair of shoes, even cinnamon sticks if they strike your fancy), you can tap open the Lens camera on Pinterest, snap a photo and find related #inspo in an instant.

This comes after research conducted by the social network suggested “monthly mobile text searches are up by 40 percent year-over-year, with that figure climbing to 60 percent for visual searches”, prompting the move to shift the Lens feature as the site’s main focal point.

Time to get snap-happy!

Google+ Goes Under the Knife

Google+ is not about to left behind in the quest for world-wide social media domination. Keeping up with their competitors, the site underwent a couple of cosmetic changes, introducing a swanky update to their search bar.

Things like ‘Popular Topics’ are now displayed, as well as a list of your most recent searches. On top of that, users can now filter searches by Posts, Communities, Collections and People & Pages, all thanks to a brand new tabbed interface.

All these features are currently being rolled out to Google+ users far and wide.

Searching the WWW doesn’t get much slicker.

The post Facebook’s 20/20 Vision first appeared on 24 fingers.

The post Facebook’s 20/20 Vision appeared first on 24 fingers.

If an Apprentice judge can become the 45th President of the United States, anything can happen.

Like an onion reaching social media stardom, a feisty emoji petition and a KFC scented candle going viral for all the wrong reasons. Don’t believe us? You’ll just have to read on…

Potty Mouth

This past Wednesday will probably go down as the funniest glitch in Twitter history.

A number of users noticed that when you searched “asshole”on Twitter, the first suggested result was none other than U.S. President Donald Trump.

Haha, type "asshole" into Twitter's search bar. Do it.

— Greg Jenner (@greg_jenner) January 26, 2017

https://twitter.com/sbstryker/status/824425792830480384

As Trump’s account lacks any of the featured keywords, many began to speculate that Twitter’s search algorithm was programmed to do it on purpose.

Though it would be a great thing to believe, the most likely cause is Google bombing – a tactic (performed by seriously clever SEO pranksters) that involves artificially elevating a website in Google’s search results ranking by linking it to a particular word or phrase.

Back to trolling algorithms, though. Might we be looking into the Internet’s future?

A Taste of Fame

Speaking of trolls, Trump better watch his back: there’s an onion on a mission.

@HalfOnionInABag has its eyes set on the prize — to upstage Trump on Twitter:

What if this account that is simply half an onion in a Ziploc bag ended up with more followers than @realDonaldTrump? pic.twitter.com/D28lODPZLO

— Half An Onion (@HalfOnionInABag) January 20, 2017

I won't clog your feeds. I'm just here to get more followers than @realDonaldTrump & then hopefully be used on a hamburger or in an omelet.

— Half An Onion (@HalfOnionInABag) January 20, 2017

With 617k followers and counting, the Twittersphere is realising the absurdity of the situation… and they’re okay with it:

Today I started following half an onion in an attempt to annoy the current president. The future is weird. https://t.co/QOSkeg7BW9

— Steve Owens (@WatertownDem) January 22, 2017

Besides attempting to beat the leader of the free world on his beloved social media platform, @HalfOnionInABag is dabbling in a bit of trolling on the side:

Eric Trump always looks like he accidentally bit into a whole raw onion & is trying to act like he meant to and that it actually tastes good pic.twitter.com/SNFPL4RlSe

— Half An Onion (@HalfOnionInABag) January 22, 2017

Whether Half an Onion succeeds in its mission, one thing is certain: a new, pungent flavour has been added to the political mix.

Gingers, Unite!

Redheads aren’t called feisty for no reason.

*Red* with rage that Apple’s iOS doesn’t cater to the ginger-haired community, more than 20,000 have signed a petition for an emoji update.

“Redheads. In all their glorious gingerness, they’ve been missed out. Again. If you say you’re going to diversify, why not add a few red-haired emoji in the mix?”, a spokesperson behind the petition has stated.

The petition’s efforts seem to have worked, as executives in Silicon Valley are set to discuss plans to introduce a redhead emoji into phones and computers worldwide.

Redheads of Twitter expressed their glee, including everyone’s favourite ginger #GBBO contestant Andrew Smyth:

Gingers really do have souls.

You Are What You Eat

When New Zealand KFC turned its signature fried chicken into a scented candle last year, the Internet was simultaneously disgusted and intrigued:

Britain, we have a problem

There’s been a courgette crisis sweeping across the nation, and hundreds of Brits have turned to social media to do what they do best: complain.

As blizzard conditions have been taking a heavy toll on crops in southern Spain, shaken shoppers have expressed a sense of despair over low stocks and rocketing prices. And, as history has proven time and time again, with profound First World Problems comes Twitter mockery:

LindSAY What!

You probably haven’t found Hollywood actress Lindsay Lohan in cinemas near you for a long while. Probably because she’s been busy finding something of her own:

After a series of bizarre occurrences – the most recent being an Instagram cull of all her own photos and a cryptic bio update – fans have speculated whether Lohan has abandoned her bougie (and boozy…) ways and found Islam.

In a statement to Us Weekly, Lohan’s rep has said the actress is “in a period of renewal”.

If there’s one thing to take away from this, it’s that if Lindsay Lohan can follow through with New Year’s resolutions, anyone can.

Being funny is a fine art, and, with so many wonderfully witty campaigns floating around the internet, it’s good to remind ourselves on what a little risk-taking and wild creativity can do for our lives.

So, without further ado, here’s our roundup of our marketing campaigns guaranteed to turn that frown upside down…

Volvo Trucks

How does the world’s second largest heavy-duty truck brand get people to take an interest in their transport solutions? With an imaginative marketing campaign featuring a full-size truck, a little girl with a remote control and a massive obstacle course.

This hugely imaginative campaign revved its way to viral stardom, racking up over 11 million views (and counting) on YouTube and demonstrating both the qualities of Volvo’s vehicles and the power of social storytelling.

Ikea Cats

Everyone knows cat clips rule the internet. So, banking on the most popurrrlar (sorry) online content to date, Ikea let loose 100 cats into one of their stores. The result? Paw-sibly the sweetest marketing advert to grace the World Wide Web.

Metro Trains Melbourne

When a metropolitan rail service’s PSA ad hits the top 10 chart on iTunes, they’re doing something right.

Launched by Metro Trains Melbourne in November, 2012, Dumb Ways to Die remains to be the world’s most shared safety campaign video, with over 143 million views (!). The animated music video uses black humour to promote train safety, featuring a bunch of ridiculously cute cartoon characters killing themselves in ridiculously absurd ways.

More catchy than Survivor’s Eye of the Tiger.

Dollar Shave Club

A startup with little to no marketing budget? No problem.

Just take notes from personal grooming delivery service Dollar Shave Club, whose very own CEO stepped in as leading man for the company’s hilariously deadpan ad.

Though it does help to have a gifted actor as your CEO…

Squatty Potty

Toilet humour. It never gets old.

With this already to their advantage, American personal care company Squatty Potty definitely didn’t need to think too much out the box when advertising their toilet accessory stool. That didn’t stop them, though.

A unicorn, rainbow poop and 29 million views later, the Squatty Potty has encouraged healthy, happy bowel movements since its conception.

JetBlue

Let’s not lie — having to listen to a baby cry during an already excruciating long flight is the absolute worst.

As there’s really no solving the crying-baby-on-plane predicament, American airline JetBlue decided to take matters into their own hands: by turning squeals and tantrums into an incentive.

These passengers were definitely in the right place, at the right time…

Pepsi Max

Coca-Cola, who? Surprising Londoners with an augmented reality stunt, Pepsi Max’s Unbelievable Bus Shelter campaign definitely left its mark on the capital and the rest of the world.

A bus-stop-window-turned- digital-poster bringing flying saucers and laser-shooting robots to life? That’s a thrilling commute if we ever did see one.

Command

We hope whoever was behind this damage-free hanging solution company’s marketing campaign got a gargantuan pay rise, for this is just sheer brilliance.

Bringing everyone’s favourite 90s icon back to big screens, metallic pants and all, 3M’s Command strips commissioned MC Hammer to front a new campaign for its hammer-less picture hanging strips. STOP Hammer Time, quite literally.

This week’s wins and fails, we’ve picked out the very best bits to keep you going…

Hi ho, hi ho

It’s off to work we go. So on Tuesday the majority of the population went back to work. No one was sure what day it was, why they were up so early or what they were supposed to be doing in the office.

Bring on the weekend!

Keeping up with Kim, again

The queen of social took a three month hiatus from all social media platforms following the horrific Paris robbery back in October – but that still didn’t mean anyone forgot about her. We saw Kim Kardashian trending multiple times without any sign from the reality star herself, until now. On the 4th of January, she began sharing a series of personal pictures of her and her family across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

There was no real explanation to her sudden reappearance, but fans were happy to see her and it looked like she was happy to be back too…

As the curtains to this this action-packed year draw to a close, we revisit some of the heartwarming, brilliant, unexpected trends that took the Internet by storm.

Without further ado, here are our winning social media happenings of the year…

You’ve Got a Friend in Me

Everybody knows that cat clips rule the internet. So, when skincare brand La Roche-Posay released perhaps the most lovable video marketing campaign of the year, its resonating message didn’t go amiss:

Curiosity won’t kill the cat, it’ll save the dog!

Orange you Glad

June 8th marked #NationalBestFriendsDay, and fizzy drink brand Fanta came up with a pun-derful tweet to mark the occasion:

Retweet to let your #bff know how you feel this #NationalBestFriendsDay. pic.twitter.com/JMprpZYA5d

— Fanta South Africa (@FantaFunZA) 8 June 2016

A punny one-liner, it truly is a work of art.

#RelationshipGoals If you haven’t yet enjoyed a ‘Colin the Caterpillar’ birthday cake, you haven’t lived. Just ask David.

For everyone’s favourite edible critter, it was definitely a landmark year of love and romance. Cue Connie, Colin’s (now not-so-new) chocolatey squeeze:

Colin the Caterpillar has a girlfriend – and she’s so sweet! https://t.co/JdBdhTZHQc #connie pic.twitter.com/oISKZ5eUi4

— Closer Mag & Online (@CloserOnline) June 3, 2016

Oh, how buttery chocolate wouldn’t melt. With this viral marketing stunt, M&S definitely enjoyed a *sweet* victory.

Please and Thank You

For many, the World Wide Web can be a difficult place to navigate. Ben’s nan wasn’t an exception. Upon discovering her very courteous question to Google, Ben had to share it with the world:

Omg opened my Nan’s laptop and when she’s googled something she’s put ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. I can’t ???????????? pic.twitter.com/hiy2tecBjU — Ben (@Push10Ben) 9 June 2016

And, upon discovering Ben’s tweet, Google had to reply:

Dearest Ben’s Nan.
Hope you’re well.
In a world of billions of Searches, yours made us smile.
Oh, and it’s 1998.
Thank YOU@Push10Ben

— Google UK (@GoogleUK) 15 June 2016

Good manners get your far (and also get you catapulted into viral superstardom).

The Queen of Twitter

Queen Elizabeth II is no stranger to the digital age. The first royal to send an e-mail way back in ‘76, Her Majesty embraced online culture once again in 2016 – social media, in particular – with her very first tweet on the official Royal Family Twitter account.

I am most grateful for the many digital messages of goodwill I have received and would like to thank you all for your kindness. Elizabeth R.

— The Royal Family (@RoyalFamily) June 21, 2016

The Selfie of the Year

Selfies bring people (and animals) together.

But the greatest selfie of 2016 did more than just that. When gymnasts Un-Jong from North Korea and Lee Eun-ju of South Korea posed together for a photo during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, they marked an iconic moment of unity between two countries.

As seen time and time again, love always wins.

Smells like School Spirit

The end of school holidays: every parent’s dream and every kid’s worst nightmare.

As Facebook newsfeeds were inundated with #BacktoSchool photos, one in particular got an A for effort:

Proving that a lucrative career can be built on social media expertise is none other than Johnny the cat, Bangkok’s feline superstar with his own bank account, a lead role in a Thai blockbuster and a casual 501k devoted followers on his Facebook page.

To anyone reading this with a pet cat — time to grab life by the claws.

Best Money Ever Spent

When 2016 suffered a setback in the form of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s break-up, it felt as though there was zero hope for the rest of us. But, as the saying goes, every cloud has a silver lining.

Optimists Norwegian Air made the best of a distressing situation with a campaign to end all campaigns:

A cheap plane ticket and a Hollywood hunk, how could anyone resist?

When Hillary Trumped Trump

Perhaps the most iconic moment of the US presidential race was when Hillary Clinton tweeted this absolute gem in regards to her (very orange) opponent:

Pugs and Kisses

Last but certainly not least, we can’t forget to pay an ode to the best Snapchat filter of the year.
