As if Brexit hadn’t been bad enough already, Toblerone made things worse for us Brits when they changed the size and shape of their chocolate bar.

A Toblerone spokeswoman attributed the change of size to the rising cost of ingredients. Whilst they said “this change wasn’t done as a result of Brexit”, they weren’t able to explain why only the UK was affected and not the rest of Europe.

Devastating. But at least we had our priorities in order, right?

Twitter played its Trump card

Donald Trump’s shock win in the US presidential election caused more chaos on Twitter than when he had control over his own account. People were not OK.

Canada’s immigration website crashed as Americans tried desperately to see how they could flee the country. To which Canada responded by dropping the mic. 

Should we have expected this though? Twitter users pointed out that The Simpsons had already called it, years prior.

Builder crowned selfie king

Construction builder Sam Wayne managed to get a very regal selfie this week when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited the housing development he was working on in Cornwall. He managed to capture Will and Kate laughing as they walked through the site. We doff 24 caps to you, Sam.

Facebook blows up

Following in their quest for world domination, Facebook attempted to launch their first satellite into space as part of a test. However, plans backfired when the SpaceX rocket – worth over $200 million – was destroyed when it exploded during take off. Oopsie.

As the Premier League’s transfer deadline day loomed, it was all Twitter could talk about on 31st August. #DeadlineDay was the top trend all day and many companies tried to take advantage of this – but some where more tactful than others. Unfortunately not many people could understand TfL’s connection between deadline day and their Journey Planner (something about having to travel to another team? It wasn’t clear).

TfL are usually in the winner’s section but I’m afraid this week they missed the point (or was it the *goal*?).

#RIPWilliam the Worm

Poor William

Tesco managed to worm their way out of a sticky situation this week with another hilarious response to an unexpected guest in a customer’s meat and two veg. Wes Metcalfe, of South Yorkshire, purchased a cucumber from his local shop earlier this week, only to discover a lifeless-looking worm inside the packaging. He took to Facebook to let Tesco (and the world) know what had happened in a post that has since gone viral. Very viral.

As Wes Metcalfe said, “If they hadn’t replied in such a fun way, then it probably wouldn’t have gone so big on the internet”. Indeed, as he informed the supermarket giant that he would be holding a funeral for dear William the worm, they wrote back with a touching eulogy:

As we gather here today for William the worm,

It’s time to reflect on the lessons we can learn.

Now, this poor worm’s life was cut far too short,

After he was crushed to death in a cucumber I bought.

Tesco, please don’t let this happen again.

Don’t let William’s life be lost in vain.

But let’s not focus on who’s to blame.

Tesco have apologised admitting their shame.

As we resume William’s body into the mud,

Please don’t shed a tear. Instead, think of the good,

For William’s death has brought us all here,

Sharing jokes and spreading cheer.

Before his death, William was completely unknown,

Spending his days in the mud on his own.

But now his name has travelled wide and far,

William the worm – the viral superstar!

FAILS

Whilst Team GB may have won big at the Olympics this year (*whooops*), the fail came when they arrived back from Rio. Proudly donning their matching Stella McCartney designer uniforms, it was when they got to baggage claim that the team realised there might be a small problem.

Adam Peaty’s #OlympicNan

The medal for most adorable nan has to go to Mavis this week, as her grandson Adam Peaty made waves in the news by breaking the world record for 100m breaststroke and winning Team GB’s first gold medal in Rio.

Her overwhelming support for Peaty was too cute for the internet to handle, and we have to say we are pretty impressed with her use of emojis. Go Mavis.

A selfie to make history

There aren’t many selfies as important as this one. Two Olympian gymnasts – North Korea’s Hong Un-jong and South Korea’s Lee Eun-ju – put politics aside as they posed together for a quick yet momentous selfie.

Digital Detox

There’s certainly some irony in the fact that #DigitalDetox was trending online this week.

Ofcom reported that, on average, Britons spend over 24 hours per week online (*guilty*) and that a third have attempted a ‘digital detox’ to their internet addiction – but only 25% of those barely lasting a day away from their screens. And the fact that we are reading about this online indicates we aren’t showing any signs of slowing down anytime soon.

On Wednesday, girl group Little Mix had a brief Instagram blunder, when the caption of one of their photos posted included copy, presumably from their PR agency. Oops.

But this isn’t the first time a celebrity has been slack with their copy-and-pasting – high profile celebs such as Scott Disick and Naomi Campbell have also slipped up when posting pictures, both of which were deleted within moments but still made headlines across the internet and gained far more attention than if the photo had been posted correctly. Which leads to the question – was it really a fail, or just a clever marketing ploy?

STILL in the news and causing far more havoc this week. Users have been caught out in forests and mountain ranges, car crashes and even shop roofs. Pokemon have issued warnings on the app to ‘Stay aware of your surroundings’ with Scotland’s Stirling Police (or should that be the sterling police of Scotland) issued a *face-palm* worthy tweet. Stay safe people.

When Melania Trump delivered her RNC speech, people were quick to pick up that it sounded awfully a lot like Michelle Obama’s 2008 speech to the Democratic National Convention – and they were not wrong. It would seem that whole paragraphs were lifted from the FLOTUS’ speech without any recognition.

Accused of blatant plagiarism, Trump’s campaign team then tried every excuse in the book to deny the claims, before finally admitting defeat. She’s tried to move on since, but Twitter won’t let her just yet – with countless and hilarious #FamousMelianaTrumpQuotes tweets dominating news feeds throughout the week. Doh.
